Ethiopia declares immediate, unilateral cease-fire in Tigray

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopia’s government declared an immediate, unilateral cease-fire Monday in its Tigray region after nearly eight months of deadly conflict as Tigray fighters occupied the regional capital and government soldiers retreated in a region where hundreds of thousands are suffering in the world’s worst famine crisis.

Kenya Plans To Increase Labour Exports To Boost Remittances

NAIROBI, Jun 3 (NNN-KBC) – Kenya plans to boost labour exports, in order to enhance remittances from the diaspora, a senior government official said yesterday.

Simon Chelugui, cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, told journalists in Nairobi, the number of Kenyans in the diaspora is estimated at four million and their remittances is below that of other African nations such as Egypt, Nigeria or Ghana.

Kenya: Police disperse protesters demonstrating against Israel's attacks on Gaza

The march began after Eid Al-Fitr prayers at a nearby mosque. An eyewitness told Reuters that several protesters had been arrested.

Kenyan official says China-built Lamu port to be operational in June

NAIROBI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese-built seaport in Kenya's coastal island of Lamu will be operational in June, a Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) official said on Monday.

China Communications Construction Company has already completed construction of the first three berths of the port, Bernard Osero, head of KPA corporate affairs, told Xinhua over the phone.

"Lamu port will specialize in handling containers and oil cargo between the east African hinterland and the rest of the world," he said.

Tanzania’s new president changes policy on COVID-19, media

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Tanzania’s new president appears to be taking a new, scientific approach to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Tuesday she will form a technical committee to advise her about the scope of COVID-19 infections in the country and how to respond to the pandemic.

COVID-19 is “not something we should be quiet about or refuse flatly or accept without doing a scientific examination,” Hassan said in Swahili.

Kenya slams Britain over COVID-19 "Red List"

NAIROBI, April 4 (Xinhua) -- "The decision by the Government of the United Kingdom to 'Red List' Kenya and to stop all travel from Kenya for those resident in Kenya and those transiting through Kenya, to the United Kingdom has been received with regret and disappointment," Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued on Saturday evening.

Man Arrested With Heroin In Coastal City Of Kenya

MOMBASA, Mar 28 (NNN-KBC) – Kenya’s anti-narcotics police, said yesterday, they have arrested a suspect, with 678 grams of heroin, in the port city of Mombasa.

Coast regional Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), commandant Washington Njiru, said, Juma Mohammed, 48, was nabbed, while crossing the busy Likoni-Ferry channel, and that he had concealed the heroin in brown granules, wrapped in a red carrier bag.

Njiru said that, investigators are probing the suspect, to nab more accomplices in the trade.

Tanzania's Hassan suspends ports chief, continuing Magufuli's anti-graft stance

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Tanzania’s new president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on Sunday ordered the suspension of the head of the ports authority over corruption allegations, continuing her late predecessor’s anti-graft drive.

Observers have been keen to see signs of policy direction from Hassan, who was sworn in on March 19 after John Magufuli died, and whose soft-spoken, consensus-seeking personality contrasts with his brash populism and authoritarianism.
