Canada's Hut 8 Mining to merge with US Bitcoin to weather crypto downturn

Feb 7 (Reuters) - Canada's Hut 8 Mining Corp (HUT.TO) will merge with rival US Bitcoin Corp to create a crypto mining giant in North America, consolidating after a steep fall in valuations for the crypto sector that saw high-profile collapses in recent months.

The companies said the combined entity will have a market capitalization of around $990 million, and be equally owned by shareholders of both the companies.

The merged entity, to be called Hut 8 Corp, will be listed on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq after the all-stock deal.

Canadian lawmakers back resettlement of 10,000 Uyghur Muslims

OTTAWA, Feb 1 (Reuters) - The Canadian parliament on Wednesday unanimously voted in favor of a non-binding proposal for the resettlement of 10,000 Uyghur Muslim refugees from China's Xinjiang region into Canada over two years.

The House of Commons voted 322-0 for Liberal member of parliament Sameer Zuberi's bill, which also called on the government to recognize that Uyghurs and other ethnic Turkic Muslims who have fled to third countries face "pressure and intimidation" by China to return.

Canada: Mass graves of indigenous children is sign of genocide

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has referred to reports about the fresh discovery of mass graves of indigenous children in Canada as a “big human tragedy” that can only be described as “genocide”.

“The restricted flow of information about the discovery of these mass graves indicates the depth of the human tragedy and is reminiscent of the crimes committed during the oppressive and racist white rule under the British control on this country,” said Kanaani.  

Canada To Send Four Tanks To Ukraine

OTTAWA, Jan 27 (NNN-XINHUA) – Canadian Defence Minister, Anita Anand, announced yesterday that, Canada will be sending four battle tanks to Ukraine, CTV News reported.

In addition to the initial four Leopard 2 tanks, Canada is considering sending more tanks at a later date, the report said, quoting government sources.

The Canadian Armed Forces, currently has 82 German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks, but they are in various states of serviceability, according to the report.

Canada's job vacancies decline in November

OTTAWA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The number of job vacancies across all sectors in Canada decreased by 20,700 to 850,300 in November, down from the peak of more than 1 million recorded in May 2022, Statistics Canada said on Thursday.

Job vacancies decreased in the professional, scientific and technical services as well as the health care and social assistance sectors in November, the national statistical agency said.

Job vacancies were up in construction, and were little changed in accommodation and food services, retail trade and manufacturing, according to the agency.

Bank of Canada hikes rates, becomes first major central bank to signal pause

OTTAWA, Jan 25 (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada on Wednesday hiked its key interest rate to 4.5%, the highest level in 15 years, and became the first major central bank fighting global inflation to say it would likely hold off on further increases for now.

The 25-basis-point increase was in line with analysts' expectations. The bank has raised rates at a record pace of 425 basis points in 10 months to tame inflation, which peaked at 8.1% and slowed to 6.3% in December, still more than three times the bank's 2% target.

Canada to donate 200 additional armoured vehicles to Ukraine

OTTAWA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Canada will donate 200 Senator Armoured Personnel Carriers to Ukraine as a new package of military assistance, Defence Minister Anita Anand announced Wednesday.

According to a press release issued by the Defence Ministry, Anand made the announcement during her visit to Kyiv and these vehicles, which are being purchased from Roshel, a Canadian company based in Ontario, are valued at over 90 million Canadian dollars (72 million U.S. dollars).

Potential new unmarked graves found at Indigenous school in Canada

OTTAWA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 2,000 anomalies and a child's remains were found during radar search of a former residential school site in Canada, local media reported Thursday.

Star Blanket Cree Nation, a First Nations band in Saskatchewan, Canada, said it has located the anomalies after completing phase one of a ground-penetrating radar search at the site of the former Qu'Appelle Indian Residential School, operated from 1884 to 1998 in the village of Lebret, Saskatchewan, about 80 km northeast of Regina, local media CTV News reported.
