Ugandan border town prepares to bury victims of rebel massacre that left 42 dead, mostly students

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A bereaved Ugandan border town on Sunday began burying the victims of a brutal attack on a school by suspected extremist rebels that left 42 people dead, most of them students, as security forces stepped up patrols along the frontier with volatile eastern Congo.

One of eight people wounded in Friday night’s attack, in which 38 students were killed, died overnight, said Selevest Mapoze, mayor of the town of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha.

“Most of the relatives have come to take their bodies” from the morgue, he said.

25 students killed as rebels attack school in western Uganda

In a statement, police spokesman Fred Enanga said that after killing the students, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels looted the property before setting the schools' dormitories on fire.

At least 41 killed in rebel attack on Ugandan school near Congo border

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Suspected rebels attacked a school in a remote area of Uganda near the Congo border, killing at least 41 people in a nighttime raid before fleeing across the porous frontier, authorities said. Thirty-eight students in their dormitories were among the victims.

Some students were burned beyond recognition, and others were shot or hacked to death after militants armed with guns and machetes attacked the school in the frontier district of Kasese, a local mayor told The Associated Press.

IMF says Ghanaian economy shows signs of stability

ACCRA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A staff team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that Ghana's economy had started showing signs of stability after the start of the IMF's three-year support program.

In a statement released late Thursday after a week-long working visit to the West African country, the IMF team said Ghana currently sees softening inflation, an increase in international reserves, and a less volatile exchange rate.

Kenya borrows 3.6 bln USD from external sources in 2022/23 fiscal year

NAIROBI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenya borrowed 504.37 billion shillings (about 3.61 billion U.S. dollars) from external lenders in the financial year 2022/2023, the National Treasury said Friday.

The loans were taken from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and through syndicated facilities and projects, noted the Treasury in a statement released in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

The total disbursements from project loans as of June 12 stood at 1.21 billion dollars, said the institution.

On Ukraine-Russia trip, South African leader’s delegation stuck at Polish airport over arms permits

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A delegation of security officials, diplomats and journalists accompanying the South African president to Ukraine and Russia was stranded on a separately chartered plane at Warsaw’s airport for more than 24 hours. Polish authorities said on Friday that the problem was over permissions for firearms.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is among a group of African leaders visiting Kyiv and Moscow on a mission to encourage a resolution to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Islamic militants kill 7 farmers in northeast Nigeria, further threatening food supplies

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Islamic extremist rebels killed at least seven farmers in northeast Nigeria, an attack that further threatens food security in the hard-hit region, local authorities told The Associated Press on Friday.

The militants attacked the farmers on Thursday as they worked on their crop fields near Borno state’s Molai area, the authorities said.

Eight Kenyan police killed in suspected al-Shabaab blast

NAIROBI, June 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Eight Kenyan police officers were killed when their vehicle was blown up by an improvised explosive device in a suspected attack by Somalia-based militant group al-Shabaab, police said.

The incident took place on Tuesday in Garissa county in eastern Kenya, a region on the border with Somalia, where al-Shabaab has been waging a bloody insurgency against the fragile government in Mogadishu for more than 15 years.

“We lost eight police officers in this attack,” North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno said.

Tanzania: Coffee Board to introduce coffee online auction to increase competitiveness

DAR ES SALAAM, June 15 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — TANZANIA Coffee Board (TCB) is planning to introduce an online auction for coffee in a bid to increase efficiency and boost bidding competitiveness.

The online platform, dubbed ‘Centralized Green Coffee Auctions’, will increase both the number of coffee buyers and farmers’ earnings.

TCB Mbeya Regional Coffee Development Officer, Sijali Bowa said the online platform will change the current auction pattern from a weekly basis to daily one, while giving bidders access to the market at their fingertips.

African leaders to propose 'confidence building measures' to Russia, Ukraine

JOHANNESBURG, June 15 (Reuters) - African leaders could propose a series of "confidence building measures" during their initial efforts to mediate in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, according to a draft framework document seen by Reuters on Thursday.

Senegal President Macky Sall and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are heading a delegation including leaders from Zambia, the Comoros, and Egypt's prime minister that will travel to Kyiv on Friday and St. Petersburg on Saturday.
