World will not be the same after BRICS expansion, says Brazil president

30 August 2023; MEMO: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that the world with its different blocs and powers “will not be the same after the expansion of the BRICS group” during the recent South African summit. President da Silva, otherwise known simply as Lula, made his comment in a weekly video presenting the most prominent local developments, Anadolu has reported. 

Russia will not probe Prigozhin plane crash under international rules

SAO PAULO/MONTREAL, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Russia has informed Brazil's aircraft investigation authority that it will not probe the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer (EMBR3.SA) jet that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin under international rules "at the moment", the Brazilian agency told Reuters on Tuesday.

Prigozhin, two top lieutenants of his Wagner Group and four bodyguards were among 10 people who died when the Embraer Legacy 600 crashed north of Moscow last week.

Brazil's Lula unveils $350 bln 'growth acceleration' plan

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The "growth acceleration" plan launched by Brazil on Friday foresees 1.7 trillion reais ($347.5 billion) in investments that will rely increasingly on public-private partnerships, while driving a new ecological transition plan, the government said.

The program, known as PAC, revisits an initiative that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva first introduced in 2007 during his earlier term in office to raise investments in energy, logistics, and urban and social infrastructure.

Pres Lula says ‘world must help’ Brazil save the Amazon

BRASILIA, Aug 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the “world must help” Brazil protect the Amazon, ahead of a summit next week on the world’s biggest rainforest, a key buffer against climate change.

“We know we have a responsibility to convince the world that investing is cheap if it’s a matter of saving the rainforest,” the veteran told a breakfast meeting with international media.

Four People Killed In Bar In Southern Brazil

SAO PAULO, Jul 12 (NNN-CMA) – At least four people were killed, including two minors, when suspects opened fire on a bar in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, local media reported yesterday.

Based on reports from the Sao Paulo Civil Police, the incident occurred minutes before midnight on Monday, in the Parque Paraiso neighbourhood of the Itapecerica da Serra district.

Two people were wounded in the shooting, which saw two suspects arrive on a motorcycle and fire multiple shots into the bar before fleeing.

Bolsonaro's political hopes die as he is barred from office until 2030

BRASILIA, June 30 (Reuters) - Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's political career was in tatters on Friday as Brazil's federal electoral court (TSE) barred the far-right nationalist from public office until 2030 for his conduct during last year's fraught election.

Five out of seven justices voted to convict the 68-year-old Bolsonaro for abuse of power and misuse of the media when, in July, before the 2022 election, he summoned ambassadors to vent unfounded claims about Brazil's electronic voting system.

Brazil court votes to bar Bolsonaro from elections until 2030

SAO PAULO (AP) — A panel of judges voted Friday to render far-right former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ineligible to run for office again after concluding that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country’s electronic voting system.

The decision, once all judges have voted, will forbid Bolsonaro from running until 2030, upending the 68-year-old’s political future and likely erasing any chance for him to regain power.
