India: Over 2,700 gifts to PM Modi on auction from Saturday

New Delhi, Sep 14 (PTI) Union Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel on Saturday inaugurated an exhibition-cum-e-auction of gifts received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last one year to raise funds for the Centre's Namami Gange Project.

More than 2,700 mementos, including shawls, pagris and jackets, at the National Gallery of Modern Art here will be auctioned on www.pmmementos.gov.in from Saturday till October 3.

India: Current economic situation challenging: Union Minister

Bengaluru, Sep 12 (PTI) Union Minister D V Sadanada Gowda on Thursday said the current economic situation in the country was "challenging", but expressed the hope that the measures taken by the union government to address it would see India quickly progress ahead 'in a very short time.'

"In 2008-09 also we had seen global slowdown, but during the time of economic slowdown, the measures taken by the administrative machinery is important as it plays a crucial role.

India: Ayodhya mosque demolition case: Tenure of special judge extended

New Delhi, Sep 13 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday told the Supreme Court that it has complied with its direction and extended the tenure of the special judge, who is conducting trial in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case involving BJP veterans L K Advani, M M Joshi and Uma Bharti.

A bench of justices R F Nariman and Surya Kant perused the affidavit and office memo placed before it by the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh.

India: Odd-even scheme returns to Delhi from Nov 4

New Delhi, Sept 13 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the odd-even road rationing scheme will be implemented in Delhi from November 4 to 15.

Kejriwal said the move was aimed at combating high levels of air pollution in winters when crop burning takes place in neighbouring states.

The chief minister announced his seven-point action plan to tackle pollution due to crop burning which includes distribution of masks, mechanised sweeping of roads, tree plantation, and special plans for 12 pollution hot spots in the city.

India: Polling for 4 DUSU positions to be held on Thursday

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) Polling for four positions of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) will be held on Thursday, with over 1.3 lakh students being eligible to cast their votes.

"EVMs were delivered to the polling centres on Wednesday and strict security arrangements have been made. The Community Hall at the Police Lines in northwest Delhi's Kingsway Camp will be the counting centre for the polls," DU Chief Election Officer Ashok Prasad said.

India: PM launches farmers' pension scheme

Ranchi, Sep 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched an ambitious pension scheme for farmers from here.

Under the 'Pradhan Mantri Kisan Mandhan Yojana', farmers between 18 and 40 years of age will get Rs 3,000 monthly pension after reaching 60 years.

The scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,774 crore for the next three years.

All small and marginal farmers who are currently between 18 to 40 years can apply for the scheme.

India: Bank unions threaten 2-day strike later this month

Chandigarh/Dharamshala, Sep 12 (PTI) Four bank employee unions have given a call for a two-day strike from the midnight of September 25 and an indefinite stir from the second week of November to protest against the mega-merger of 10 nationalised banks, a union leader said on Thursday.

The unions are also pressing for expeditious wage revision, the introduction of the five-day week and other demands.

India: Police did not have warrant to search house: Prof Hany Babu

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) Delhi University Professor Hany Babu, whose house was raided in connection with the 2017 Elgaar Parishad case for alleged Maoist links, alleged that police did not have a search warrant and they seized the phones of his daughter and wife, not allowing them to communicate with friends.

Babu, who has been teaching at DU's English Department for close to a decade, said the police took away laptops which contain his research.

India: Minor gangraped near ESI Hospital

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men on a vacant plot near ESI Hospital in West Delhi's Moti Nagar on Tuesday, police said.

The accused, identified as Ravi (25) and Ankit (24), residents of Basaidarapur, have been arrested, they said.

The incident took place on Monday. The accused approached her on the pretext of a job. They took her to the isolated spot and raped her, police said.
