Egypt opens ancient "Bent Pyramid" to visitors for 1st time

CAIRO, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities opened on Saturday the 4,600-year-old Bent Pyramid at Dahshur royal necropolis in Giza province southern the capital Cairo to visitors for the first time after its restoration and reparation works have been done.

The pyramid belongs to Old Kingdom's Pharaoh Sneferu, and it was named as the "Bent Pyramid" or "the Pyramid with Two Angles" for having two different angles of inclination from base to top.

Tunisia win on penalties to end 54-year dominance by Ghana

9 July 2019; AFP: Tunisia defeated Ghana 5-4 on penalties Monday with Ferjani Sassi converting the decisive spot-kick to end a 54-year Africa Cup of Nations losing streak against the Black Stars.

After a 1-1 draw following extra time in Ismailia, Tunisia scored from all five penalties while Ghana substitute Caleb Ekusan had his attempt saved by Farouk Ben Mustapha, who came off the bench especially for the shootout.

Sudanese say US pressure was key to reaching transition deal

CAIRO (AP) — The power-sharing agreement reached between Sudan’s military and pro-democracy protesters last week came after the United States and its Arab allies applied intense pressure on both sides amid fears a prolonged crisis could tip the country into civil war, activists and officials said.

The agreement, which raised hopes of a democratic transition following the military overthrow of long-ruling autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April, was announced days after the protesters held mass marches through Khartoum and other areas.

Egypt increases fuel prices to promote economic reform

CAIRO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Egypt on Friday increased fuel prices by up to 30 percent to meet the terms of a loan deal of 12 billion U.S. dollars and push to implement the economic reform plans, a move which experts described as positive and timely.

The price of 92 octane gasoline increased from 6.75 Egyptian pounds (0.41 dollars) to 8 pounds per liter, while the price of 80 octane gas increased from 5.5 pounds to 6.75 pounds per liter.

Deadly land, deadly sea: Libya migrants face brutal choice

CAIRO (AP) — A boat from Libya carrying 86 migrants sank in the Mediterranean and left only three survivors, authorities said Thursday, after an airstrike on a detention center near the Libyan capital killed dozens of others.

The twin tragedies illustrate the almost unthinkable choice facing those who have reached the North Africa coast while seeking a better life in Europe: Risk a hazardous sea voyage in a flimsy, rubber-sided boat, or face being crammed into a detention center, where some of the migrants say they have been forced to assemble weapons for someone else’s war.

Migrants stranded in Libya endure sewage, maggots, disease

CAIRO (AP) — For hundreds of African migrants, dreams of a new life in Europe have instead ended in a detention center in the remote desert of war-torn Libya, where they say they have been held for months amid raw sewage, piles of garbage, disease, maggots and barely enough food to survive.

Egypt, UAE send military support to Libya’s Haftar

22 June 2019; MEMO: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has offered urgent military support for the forces of Libyan General Khalifa Haftar, who is fighting against the internationally-recognised Libyan government in the capital Tripoli.

Egypt also dispatched military experts to the battlefields in Libya to fight side-by-side with Haftar’s forces, Arabi 21 reported yesterday.

Egypt authorities refuse to receive condolences at Morsi’s house

20 June 2019; MEMO: The Egyptian authorities are preventing the former President Mohamed Morsi’s family from holding a consolation for his death at his home, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

“They have banned us from holding neither your funeral prayers nor your consolation,” Morsi’s son, Abdullah, said on Facebook.

“Even in our family’s house, we were not allowed to receive solace,” he stressed.
