US ignores its allies’ interests attempting to stop Nord Stream 2, says Bundestag official

BERLIN, July 27. /TASS/: Putting pressure on the Nord Stream 2 project, Washington ignores the interests of its allies in Europe, head of the Bundestag (German parliament) Economy and Energy Committee Klaus Ernst told TASS.

"The dispute around Nord Stream 2 demonstrates that representatives of the American politics are trying to use political means to promote their own interests without reference to allies," he said.

German cruise ship sets sail, hopes short trip thwarts virus

BERLIN (AP) — A German cruise ship is gingerly testing the water amid the coronavirus pandemic, setting sail for the first time since the industry was shut down months ago and using strict precautions to keep passengers and crew as safe as possible.

The TUI cruise ship “Mein Schiff 2” — literally “My Ship 2” — set sail for a weekend cruise in the North Sea late Friday night, the dpa news agency reported.

Verdict due in German trial of former Nazi SS camp guard

BERLIN (AP) — As a 17-year-old SS private, Bruno Dey could hear the screams of Jews dying in the gas chamber of Nazi Germany’s Stutthof concentration camp from his post in a guard tower, and watched daily as their bodies were carted to the crematorium to be turned into ash.

A Hamburg state court is set to decide Thursday whether Dey’s role as a camp guard more than 75 years ago is enough to convict him of 5,230 counts of accessory to murder, equal to the number of people believed to have been killed in Stutthof during his service there.

German industries condemn U.S. sanctions threat against Nord Stream 2 pipeline

BERLIN, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The Federation of German Industries (BDI) condemned the U.S. sanctions threat against companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 project as a "serious strain on transatlantic relations" on Friday.

The sanctions threatened by the U.S. would "create an increased legal security and investment risk for around 120 large and small companies from 12 countries," said BDI Director General Joachim Lang, who feared that consumer gas prices in Europe could rise as a result.

Germany willing to compromise on EU recovery fund: Merkel

BERLIN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Germany is willing to compromise on the European recovery fund at the upcoming summit of the European Union (EU) leaders.

"We will of course go to Brussels and the German side has a certain stock of willingness to compromise," Merkel said during a press conference ahead of a preparatory meeting with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Germany insists self-regulation not enough for Facebook

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany is determined to expand its attempts to regulate online hate speech even as Facebook (FB.O) promises to do more to clean up its site after a global advertiser boycott, with politicians saying the issue is too important to leave to self-regulation.

A German law in force since 2018 demands that social networks delete or block obviously criminal content within 24 hours of receiving a complaint or face a hefty fine.

German official: Tourism with Turkey will resume ‘soon’

07 July 2020; MEMO: The German government’s Commissioner for Tourism, Thomas Bareiss, said Monday that tourism with Turkey will resume soon.

Bareiss told German broadcaster NTV that “every country should be treated fairly and I am pretty confident that tourism activity between Turkey and Germany will resume soon”.
