India’s contracting economy rebooting from coronavirus blow

NEW DELHI (AP) — Millions of distressed Indian manufacturers and traders are counting on the eagerly-awaited October-December festive season to rescue them from their coronavirus catastrophe.

But spending may be the last thing on the minds of many Indians who have lost their jobs or businesses in the pandemic downturn, and pressure is building for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to do more to regain the momentum of growth that, at 8.2% in 2016-17, made India one of the fastest growing major economies.

India: Rahul Gandhi pushed, shoved to the ground then arrested

NOIDA; 01 Oct 2020 (UMMN): Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were going to Hathras to meet family members of the 19-year-old woman who died on September 29, two weeks after being raped and tortured by four men when their vehicle was stopped at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border by UP Police.

Rahul Gandhi was shoved and pushed to the ground by police personnel, as he decided to walk on foot to Hathras.

India: Bhushan files fresh plea in SC seeking review of punishment in contempt case

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan moved the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking review of the August 31 sentencing order to either pay nominal fine of Re 1 or face a three-month jail term and debarment from law practice for three years in the contempt case for his two tweets against the judiciary.

Bhushan, who has already deposited Re 1 as fine with the apex court's registry on September 14, has filed two separate review petitions in the contempt case.

India: Woman's body found stuffed in box in UP's Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur (UP), Oct 1 (PTI) The body of an unidentified woman was found stuffed in a box lying in the Maniram area in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district on Thursday, police said.

The police said there was no visible injury marks on the body of the woman, who is believed to be in her early 30s. She was wearing a red dress and put on vermilion and bindi on her forehead.

India: Woman found dead near rail tracks in UP's Shamli

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 1 (PTI) A half-burnt body of a woman was found near the rail tracks in Shamli district's Kandhla town, police said here on Thursday.

According to SHO Karmvir Singh, the body was found on Wednesday evening and has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

He said those behind the incident might have tried to hid her identity by burning the body.

The woman has been identified as Satbiri. According to her son Balram, she was missing for a day.

India: Custom-made B777 plane for VVIP travel arrives

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) A custom-made B777 aircraft, which will be used to fly the president, vice president and prime minister, has arrived in Delhi from the US on Thursday, said government officials.

The plane was scheduled to be delivered by aircraft manufacturer Boeing to Air India in July but its delivery was delayed twice - once in July for a few weeks due to COVID-19 pandemic and then in August for a few weeks due to technical reasons - the officials noted.

India: Three of six people who raped an Assam woman arrested

Coimbatore, Oct 1 (PTI) Three of six people, who allegedly raped a guest woman worker in nearby Tirupur district, were arrested on Thursday, police said.

Search is on for the others,they said.

The 22-year-old woman, hailing from Assam and staying at Sarsavanapatti in the city, in her complaint said she had sought a job from Rajeshkumar, a person whom she knew while working at a mill in Tirupur, as she was living alone after being deserted by her husband.

India: Hathras woman not raped, claims UP Police

Lucknow, Oct 1 (PTI) A senior Uttar Pradesh police officer said on Thursday said the forensic report has revealed that the 19-year-old Hathras woman who succumbed to her injuries at a Delhi hospital was not raped.

Citing a forensic science laboratory (FSL) report, ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said the cause of her death is an injury on the neck and trauma resulting due to it.

"The report of the FSL has also come. It says clearly that samples did not have sperm. It makes clear that there was no rape or gang rape," Kumar said.

India: Mathura court dismisses plea seeking removal of mosque

Mathura, Sep 30 (PTI) A Mathura court on Wednesday dismissed the plea seeking the removal of a mosque near the birthplace of Lord Krishna here, the petitioners' counsel said.

We will move the upper court as several pertinent issues have not been considered by the court, the counsel for the plaintiffs, Hari Shankar Jain, said.

Last week, a group of people moved the Mathura court over the 17th century Shahi Idgah mosque they claim was built at the birthplace of Lord Krishna, within the 13.37-acre premises of the Katra Keshav Dev temple.

India: 81 doctors 'missing' from duties in Uttarakhand, CM allows sacking

Dehradun, Sept 30 (PTI) Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Wednesday cleared a proposal for sacking 81 doctors who have been absent from their duties unauthorisedly.

All these doctors are of the state's medical health services cadre, an official release here said.

The recommendation for the terminating services of these doctors from the date of their absence from duty has been forwarded to the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission on the direction of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, it said.
