India: Punjab Assembly moves resolution against CAA

Chandigarh, Jan 17 (PTI) The ruling Congress moved a resolution in the state Assembly here on Friday demanding that the Central government scrap the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.

State Minister Brahm Mohindra moved the resolution against the CAA on the second day of the two-day special session.

India: No one in Punjab state sleeps hungry: Minister

Chandigarh, Jan 3 (PTI) Nobody sleeps hungry in Punjab unless they are dieting, a minister here said when asked to comment on the state's lower ranking in the latest Niti Aayog's sustainable development goals (SDG) Index.

"Look, there is no person in Punjab who sleeps without having food at night," Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said.

"And if anybody is missing on his meal then he has done so just to reduce his weight. Punjab's diet is very heavy and healthy and our food is rich. There is no one in Punjab who sleeps hungry," Sidhu said.

India: Protest against citizenship law in Punjab

Chandigarh, Jan 3 (PTI) Members of the Muslim community, joined by students, held protests against the amended citizenship law in parts of Punjab on Friday.

At Malerkotla, protesters were led by former JNU student leader Umar Khalid.

On a call given by Muslim leaders in the state, they protested peacefully after Friday prayers, police said.

India: Massive protest against CAA, NRC in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Dec 19 (PTI) Scores of people on Thursday staged a protest here to express their resentment against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.

Various Muslim outfits that had given a call for protest were joined by some students and Sikh outfits.

The agitators gathered near a mosque in Sector 20 here to register their dissent against the CAA.

India: Aamir Khan visits Golden Temple

Amritsar, Nov 30 (PTI) Superstar Aamir Khan paid obeisance at the Golden Temple here on Saturday.

Khan sat in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple and spent around 50 minutes listening to religious hymns sung by Sikh priests, an official of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) said.

SGPC Chief Secretary Roop Singh remained with Khan in the marbled periphery of the Golden Temple.

Dalai Lama extols Guru Nanak's message of peace, harmony

Amritsar, Nov 9 (PTI) Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Saturday gave a message of peace and harmony at an event to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

The Dalai Lama was speaking at an interfaith confluence organised in the Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar to commemorate the Prakash Purab celebrations of the first Guru.

The revered monk talked about compassion, non-violence, rationality and the relevance of reason in religion and spirituality.

Indian PM inaugurates Kartarpur corridor, flags off pilgrims

Dera Baba Nanak (Gurdsapur), Nov 9 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Kartarpur corridor, flagging off the first batch of over 500 Indian pilgrims here, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

The corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in this Punjab district.

India: Punjab CM asks Sikh devotees to visit Kartarpur

Sultanpur Lodhi (Punjab), Nov 5 (PTI) Ushering in the week-long celebrations for Guru Nanak Dev's 550th birth anniversary, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday asked followers of Sikhism to visit Kartarpur in Pakistan and said their dream of a 'darshan' at the historic Darbar Sahib will be realised later this week.

India: Dera Baba Nanak ready to welcome 30,000 pilgrims a day

Dera Baba Nanak (Punjab), Oct 31 (PTI) Come November 8, 2019, and the historic town of Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab will witness a convergence of tens of thousands of pilgrims for four days.

To accommodate the pilgrims, many of whom will be coming from distant lands, a sprawling 30 acres of land has been transformed into a well-equipped Tented City, with a capacity to put up around 3,500 people a day.

India: Punjab Assembly bypolls: Cong wins 3 seats, Akalis 1

Chandigarh, Oct 24 (PTI) The ruling Congress won three Assembly seats, while the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won one in the Punjab bypolls, the results of which were announced on Thursday.

While the Congress won the Jalalabad, Phagwara and Mukerian seats, the SAD came up trumps in Dakha.
