Jaipur/Agra, Jan 9 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said the prime minister got a woman to defend him in Parliament as he couldn't do so himself, a remark that appeared to trigger a sharp retort from Narendra Modi who accused the opposition of insulting Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Calling Modi a prime minister who claimed to have a broad chest, Gandhi said, the prime minister had "run away" from debate in Parliament on the defence deal.

Indian man held from Rajasthan for kidnapping, marrying minor

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) A 25-year-old man was arrested from Rajasthan for allegedly kidnapping a minor and forcefully marrying her, police said Monday.

The accused was identified as Manjeet Singh, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, they said, adding that he was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000.

India: No place for hatred in democracy: Gehlot

Mumbai, Jan 3 (PTI) There is no place for hatred and violence in democracy, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said Thursday.

The Congress was opposed to BJP's ideology, but it did not want the saffron party to cease to exist, he said.

Gehlot, sworn in as chief minister last month, was in Nanded in central Maharashtra to inaugurate statues of the 19th century social reformer couple Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao Phule on Savitribai's birth anniversary.

Rajasthan's only Muslim minister prays at Shiva temple

Barmer, Jan 2 (PTI) Shale Mohammad, the only Muslim face in Ashok Gehlot's cabinet, offered prayers at a Shiva temple in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer days after taking charge of the minority affairs department.

Mohammad, son of Muslim religious leader Gazi Fakir, reached his constituency Pokhran in Jaisalmer on Sunday for the first time after becoming a minister.

India: Togadia to launch political party

Jodhpur, Jan 2 (PTI) International Hindu Parishad president Pravin Togadia on Wednesday said he would launch a political party in a month's time and rope in candidates for almost all the seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

He said the preparations for floating the party had already been initiated, adding that he would soon announce the name of the party.

On a day-long visit to Jodhpur, Togadia claimed that the BJP-led central government had failed on every front and the people of the country needed an alternative.

India: Man booked for raping minor daughter

Kota, Dec 25 (PTI) A 40-year-old man has been booked for allegedly raping his 13-year-old daughter twice in two days in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said on Tuesday.

Based on a complaint by the girl, a case was filed against her father at women police station in Jhalawar on Monday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly raping her, sub inspector (SI) and police station in-charge Ramesh Chand Meroth said.

India: Two booked for raping minor in Rajasthan

Sikar, Dec 25 (PTI) Two persons were booked for allegedly raping a minor girl in Rajasthan's Sikar district, police said Tuesday.

The incident had taken place four months ago but the report was lodged against the two accused on Monday, Station House Officer (SHO) Dantaramgarh, Shabbir Khan said.

In her complaint, the girl had alleged that the accused-- Man Singh and Ravi Sharma-- raped her four months ago, he said.

India: 23 ministers take oath of office in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Dec 24 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expanded his council of ministers on Monday with 23 ministers, including one from Congress ally Rashtriya Lok Dal, being sworn in at the Raj Bhavan here.

Of the 23, 13 are cabinet ministers and 10 ministers of state.

Governor Kalyan Singh administrated the oath of office to the new ministers at an event attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and senior Congress leaders.

The ministers took oath in Hindi.

India: Woman stoned to death by husband in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Dec 23 (PTI) A 32-year-old woman was allegedly stoned to death by her husband in the Rajsamand district of the state, police said Sunday.

Police have detained Narsingh Rawat for allegedly killing his wife of 12 years, Rekha Devi, following a heated argument, police said, adding that the couple has four children.

"The accused (Rawat) following a dispute with his wife, stoned her to death," SHO Bheem Police Station Labhu Ram said.
