Over 7,000 DR Congo refugees cross into Uganda after intense fighting back home

KAMPALA, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Over 7,000 people from the eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have crossed into Uganda after intense fighting back home, authorities in Uganda's border district of Kisoro said on Wednesday.

The Congolese are fleeing fighting that started on March 28 between DRC troops and rebels, Kisoro Chief Administrative Officer Manasseh Rukundo said in a statement.

He called for emergency response, saying the district is overwhelmed by the refugee influx.

7,000 Congolese flee to Uganda following rebel attacks

KAMPALA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least 7,000 Congolese refugees have so far crossed into Uganda following attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a top official said here Friday.

Esther Anyakun, Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees said in a statement that the refugees crossed into Uganda on Feb. 2 through the western Uganda district of Bundibugyo and were being handled and forwarded to refugee reception centers.

Elephant tramples Saudi tourist to death in Uganda

KAMPALA, Jan 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A tourist from Saudi Arabia was trampled to death by an elephant in a national park in Uganda after he got out of the car he was travelling in, a wildlife official said.

The deceased was passing through the Murchison Falls National Park to Arua city with colleagues when they stopped to relieve themselves, Uganda wildlife authority spokesman Bashir Hangi said in a statement.

A herd of elephants charged at them and the deceased, Ayman Sayed Elshahany, who had moved further away from the vehicle, was unable to return.

Nine killed in two separate road accidents in central Uganda

KAMPALA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and five others seriously injured in two separate road accidents in central Uganda on Friday, police said Saturday.

Faridah Nampiima, Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson, said in a statement that five people died and four others were seriously injured after a vehicle they were travelling in from the capital Kampala towards Gulu rammed into a South Sudan registered trailer from behind at Kyampisi in the central district of Nakasongola.

Seven killed in road accident in northern Uganda

KAMPALA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Seven people died after a lorry they were travelling in lost control and overturned in the northern Uganda district of Lira on Monday.

According to the Police, the incident happened on Monday night as vendors were returning from a market outside Lira City.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the police spokesperson for Aswa River region, told Xinhua by telephone on Tuesday that the injured were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Uganda targets 8 million children in January 2022 mass polio vaccination

KAMPALA, Dec 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Starting January 2022, the government with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) is set to conduct mass polio immunization across the country targeting an estimated 8 million children aged below 5.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyoona says the national immunization campaign will be conducted house-to-house from the second week of January to ensure that the targeted population is covered.

US hits Uganda’s Chief of Military Intelligence with sanctions

KAMPALA, Dec 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has expressed disappointment following financial sanctions imposed against Maj General Abel Kandiho by the United States (US) government.

Maj Gen Kandiho who is the Chief of Military Intelligence in UPDF was slapped with sanctions over alleged human rights abuses committed under his watch.

In a statement by UPDF, the US government acted without due process and in total disregard of the principle of “fair hearing”, coupled with failure to make the necessary consultations.

World rallies behind Uganda in renewed terror war with regional connotation

KAMPALA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Deadly twin bomb blasts in Uganda's capital Kampala earlier this week have drawn worldwide condemnation, with different capitals pledging to stand with Uganda in the fight against the resurgence of terror attacks that have regional connotations.

Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an affiliate of the Islamic State in central Africa, claimed the suicide attacks that left seven people dead, including three suicide bombers, and 37 other people injured. Similar attacks were carried out in central Uganda last month, although they were of a lesser magnitude.

Uganda’s Kampala bombings: Muslim cleric accused of jihadist links shot dead

KAMPALA, Nov 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Security forces in Uganda have shot dead a Muslim cleric accused of working with an armed group linked to suicide bombings in the capital Kampala.

Officials said Sheikh Muhammad Abas Kirevu had recruited for cells run by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – rebels who have pledged allegiance to the Daesh group.

He was killed just outside Kampala.

At least four people were killed by attackers on motorbikes who blew themselves up in the city on Tuesday.

Six dead, 33 injured in twin bomb blasts in Ugandan capital

KAMPALA, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Six people including three suicide bombers were killed and 33 others injured in twin bomb blasts in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Tuesday, police said.

Fred Enanga, police spokesperson told reporters that three suicide bombers detonated themselves at a checkpoint at the Central Police Station and on the parliamentary avenue.

Enanga said the injured were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital while counter-terrorism response teams managed to pursue a fourth suicide bomb attacker.
