India: JNU protesters' march stopped at Shashtri Bhavan

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) The Delhi Police has stopped near Shashtri Bhawan the march by students and members of civil society organisations towards the HRD Ministry.

Hundreds of demonstrators hit the streets on Thursday protesting the recent violence at JNU and demanding resignation of the varsity vice-chancellor.

CPI(M) leaders Sitaram Yechury, D Raja, Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat and LJD leader Sharad Yadav also joined the march.

India: Nirbhaya case: Death row rapist Vinay Kumar Sharma moves curative plea in SC

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) In a last ditch effort to escape the noose, Vinay Kumar Sharma, one of the four men sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

A curative petition is the last legal remedy available to a convict.

On Tuesday, a Delhi court issued death warrants against Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and said they will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.

India: Delegation of envoys to India to visit JK soon

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) A delegation of ambassadors from 15-20 countries including those from the Gulf region are scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir soon to be briefed on the security situation in the union territory, officials said on Tuesday.

They also said that efforts were on to rope in some ambassadors from the P5 countries like the US, the UK, France and Russia but confirmation is awaited.

India: Cong fact-finding team interacts with JNU students

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) A four-member fact-finding team of the Congress visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday to probe the attack on students and faculty members by a masked mob earlier this week.

The team comprising All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev, party MP from Ernakulam Hibi Eden, former NSUI president of JNU unit Syed Nasser Hussain and former NSUI president and ex-president of Delhi University Students' Union Amrita Dhawan interacted with students on the issue.

Statements of students were video-graphed.

India asks citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iraq

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) The government on Wednesday issued a travel advisory, asking citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iraq in view of prevailing situation in the Gulf country.

In retaliation to killing of top Iranian commander General Qassem Soleimani, Iran has launched missile strikes against two US military bases in Iraq on Wednesday.

"In view of the prevailing situation in Iraq, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Iraq until further notification," the advisory by Ministry of External Affairs said.

Indian Govt clueless on how to deal with sinking economy: Cong

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) The Congress on Monday said the country's economy continued to sink and the Modi government was clueless as regards how to deal with the situation.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said with oil prices continuing to rise amid an escalating Iran-US row, the government did not have the wisdom to deal with the situation if it turned similar to the 1991 economic crisis.

India: BJP received over 52 lakh calls in support of CAA

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) Over 52 lakh calls were received by the BJP from people who have extended their support to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.

As part of its campaign to mobilise a nationwide support for the CAA, a toll-free number was launched by the BJP for people to give missed calls to extend their support to the newly enacted legislation.

As many as 52.72 lakh calls were received on the toll-free number till 8 pm on Monday, Shah told reporters here.

India: JNU violence: Delhi Cong demands Amit Shah's resignation

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) Delhi Congress president Subhash Chopra on Monday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the attack on students and teachers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University a day ago, saying the country "did not witness" such violence even during the British rule.

Addressing a public meeting at Patparganj, Chopra claimed that people of Delhi were living in fear after masked men attacked JNU students and teachers on Sunday evening.

India: Two FIRs lodged for vandalism at JNU server room

Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs in connection with vandalism at the server room at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, police said on Tuesday.

The FIRs were registered on the complaint of JNU administration on January 5, they said.

The JNU administration had given the names of students union office bearers including its president Aishe Gosh in connection with the vandalism but police have not put her name or that of other students in the accused column of the FIRs.

India: Face consequences if you go on strike: Govt to employees

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The Centre has warned its employees of "consequences" if they go on strike called on January 8 by one of their associations to protest against union government's policies including labour reforms, foreign direct investment (FDI) and privatisation, according to a Personnel ministry order.
