India: PM Modi pays tributes to Savarkar on death anniversary

New Delhi, Feb 26 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Hindutva icon 'Veer' Savarkar on his death anniversary.

In a tweet, Modi hailed him as a great freedom fighter who, he said, was an epitome of sacrifice and resolve.

His life dedicated to serving the motherland will always be a source of inspiration for the countrymen, the prime minister said.

A foremost proponent of the Hindutva ideology, Savarkar died in 1966.

India pays British firm Cairn Rs 7,900 cr (79 billion) to settle dispute

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) The Indian government has paid Cairn Energy Plc Rs 7,900 crore to refund taxes it had collected to enforce a retrospective tax demand, ending a seven-year-old dispute that had tarred the country's image as an investment destination.

The company, which is now known as Capricorn Energy PLC, in a statement said it has received "net proceeds of USD 1.06 billion", of which nearly 70 per cent will be returned to the shareholders.

Boeing delivers 12th P-8I patrol aircraft to Indian Navy

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) US aerospace major Boeing on Thursday said it has delivered the 12th Poseidon-8I maritime patrol aircraft to India.

The fleet is being operated by the Indian Navy primarily to carry out surveillance in the Indian Ocean region.

Boeing said the aircraft delivered on Wednesday was the fourth of the four additional aircraft contract for which was signed in 2016.

India: In a first such case, Union Law Secy appointed Delhi HC judge

New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI) In a first, a union law secretary has been appointed as a judge of a high court.

According to the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry, Union Law Secretary Anoop Kumar Mendiratta has been elevated as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

Mendiratta was appointed as judge based on his seniority as a judicial officer, sources in the government said.

India: Active COVID-19 cases in country decline to 148,359

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) India logged 14,148 new coronavirus infections, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 42,881,179, while the active cases dipped to 148,359, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The death toll climbed to 5,12,924 with 302 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The daily COVID-19 cases have remained below one lakh for 18 consecutive days.

India: Vote for one who answers fearlessly: Rahul to voters in Punjab

New Delhi, Feb 20 (PTI) With Punjab going to polls on Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged people of the state to vote for the one who supports them and answers fearlessly.

He also urged voters in Uttar Pradesh, where polling is taking place for the third phase, to vote for development, and said a new future will be laid out with the formation of a new government.

Voting for 117 Assembly seats in Punjab is taking place while polling is also underway in 59 Assembly constituencies spread across 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

India: 'Y' category security to Kumar Vishwas

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) The Centre on Saturday decided to give 'Y' category security to former leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Kumar Vishwas, official sources said.

The central government had reviewed the security of Vishwas and the threat perception based on intelligence inputs in the wake of his allegations against AAP convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

After the review, it was decided to give Vishwas 'Y' category security through the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the sources said.

India, UAE eye $100bn in annual trade after signing trade pact

18 Feb 2022; MEMO: India and the United Arab Emirates signed a broad trade and investment pact on Friday (February 18) that will eventually cut all tariffs on each other's goods and aims to more than double the annual trade between the two nations to $100 billion within five years, Reuters reports.

The virtual signing ceremony marks the first trade deal sealed by the Gulf State since it began pursuing such pacts last September in a bid to strengthen its status as a business hub.
