Auto driver killed by passengers in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A 26-year-old autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death allegedly by his passengers over charging extra fare at night and carrying an additional passenger at Connaught Place here, police said Monday.

The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam who used to live alone in Joga Bai extension, Jamia Nagar. Alam's family including his wife, children and mother, live in Malda in West Bengal, a police officer said.

#MeToo movement in India is a wrong practice: BJP MP

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) BJP MP Udit Raj Tuesday termed the #MeToo movement in India a "wrong practice" and questioned the relevance of making sexual harassment allegations against anybody after 10 years.

The #MeToo storm has intensified in the country with more women recounting their experiences of sexual harassment in the entertainment and media industry.

"#MeToo movement is important but what is the relevance of making sexual harassment allegations against anybody ten years later? How will the truth in these allegations be established after so long?

SC to hear plea challenging Rafale deal on October 10

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court will hear a fresh PIL against the Rafale deal between India and France on Wednesday.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph Monday said it will hear the PIL filed by lawyer Vineet Dhanda, who is seeking a direction to the Centre to reveal details of the deal and the comparative prices during the UPA and NDA rule in a sealed cover to the apex court.

The petition also sought information about the contract given to Reliance by Dassault.

India: HC allows CBI to file closure report in missing JNU student's case

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a closure report in the case of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing from the university nearly two years ago.

A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel "declined" the plea of the missing student's mother, Fatima Nafees, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and monitor the probe, thereby removing the CBI from the investigation.

Delhi's air quality slips back to poor category: authorities

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) Delhi's air quality has slipped back to poor category due to change in direction of wind, which is now flowing from stubble burning areas in Punjab and Haryana, authorities said Monday.

The air quality Sunday had improved to moderate level with an index of 181 but Monday the air quality slipped to poor category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 235, according to data at the Centre-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

Plea in SC seeks review of Sabarimala judgement

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking review of the Constitution bench judgement which lifted the ban on entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala.

The plea, filed by Shylaja Vijayan, president of National Ayyappa Devotees Association, said the September 28 judgment which had allowed entry of women of all ages in the hill-top shrine is "absolutely untenable and irrational, if not perverse".

Plea in SC to bring office of UP Chief Minister under Lokayukta law

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to amend the law to bring the office of Chief Minister under the purview of state ombudsman, Lokayukta.

The plea said that the existing status of the 'Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta and Up-Lokayukta Act, 1975' does not make the ombudsman "powerful enough to serve the purpose and object for which it was enacted".

Jamia Milia university 'agrees' to appoint Turkish teachers

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) The Jamia Millia Islamia University administration has accepted the students' demand to appoint Turkish teachers, even as the students claimed they got only a 'verbal assurance' from the varsity, officials said Saturday.

A spokesperson from the administration said they have accepted the demands of the students.

The students have been sitting in protest against the absence of Turkish language teachers. On Friday, they had a meeting with the administration where they said the administration agreed with them on most of the issues.
