India: Oppn leaders meet over breakfast to chalk out joint strategy, Rahul Gandhi calls for unity

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Leaders of several opposition parties attended a breakfast meeting hosted by former Congress President Rahul Gandhi at the Constitution Club here on Tuesday where stress was laid on opposition unity.

Several opposition MPs led by Gandhi later cycled to Parliament to highlight the issue of fuel price hike.

Some opposition MPs, who could not cycle, walked down to Parliament.

India: Babul Supriyo to quit politics; resig as an MP.

Kolkata, Jul 31 (PTI) Days after he was dropped in the central cabinet reshuffle, former Union Minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo said on Saturday that he has decided to quit politics and will be resigning as an MP.

He hinted the decision was partly due to losing the ministerial berth and also differences with the state BJP leadership.

Supriyo (50), who had held several portfolios as MOS in the Narendra Modi government since 2014, was removed earlier this month in a major cabinet rejig.

India: Prominent activists criticise triple talaq law

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Prominent citizens and activists like Aruna Roy and Teesta Setalvad on Sunday criticised the law against triple talaq, claiming it is fundamentally anti-minority, anti-women and anti-constitutional.

They also said that the law seeks to disparage the Muslim community.

Their remarks came on a day the government and several organisations observed 'Muslim Women's Rights Day' to mark the enactment of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

India: JD-U MPs meet Shah to demand caste-based census

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MPs, led by their newly elected president Rajiv Ranjan Singh, met Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday to demand a caste-based census.

The party, an ally of the ruling BJP-led NDA alliance, had passed a resolution on the matter in its national executive meeting on Saturday.

The party also spoke against any coercive measures such as the enactment of laws to control population growth.

India: Lalu Yadav, Mulayam Singh meet in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav met here on Monday.

SP president and Mulayam Singh Yadav's son Akhilesh Yadav was also present in the meeting.

In a tweet in Hindi, Lalu said, "Met the country's senior most socialist friend Shri Mulayam Singhji and enquired about his wellbeing. We have common concerns and fight about farmers, inequality, the poor and the unemployed."

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Army Chief Gen MM Naravane on Friday held a telephonic conversation with his Nepalese counterpart Gen Purna Chandra Thapa, focusing on bilateral military and defence cooperation in the backdrop of evolving security scenario in the region.

Officials said the talks focused on ongoing military cooperation between the two countries as well as ways to further expand it.

India Pegasus issue: SC to hear plea of journalists N Ram, Sashi Kumar next week

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The Supreme Court will next week hear a plea by senior journalists N Ram and Sashi Kumar seeking an independent probe by a sitting or a retired judge into the Pegasus snooping matter.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana on Friday took note of senior advocate Kapil Sibal's submissions that the petition, which has been numbered after filing with the apex court registry, needed an urgent hearing in view of its wide ramifications.

New Delhi, July 30 (PTI) High tariffs faced by domestic exporters in the European Union and the UK as compared to zero duty access given by these countries to nations like Bangladesh and Cambodia are affecting India's exports performance, Parliament was informed on Friday.

Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Jardosh also said that the textile industry has been hugely affected due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
