Over 81,000 people enter Ethiopia from Sudan: UN

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of people arriving in Ethiopia due to the conflict in Sudan has reached 81,095, according to the UN migration agency.

As of Sept. 16, a total of 81,095 crossings had been made by returnees, refugees and asylum seekers from conflict-affected Sudan to its neighboring country Ethiopia, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in its latest update issued on Thursday.

African Union suspends Gabon's membership following military coup

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) Commission has suspended Gabon from the pan-African bloc until normal constitutional order is restored in the country following the latest military coup.

The decision to suspend Gabon from the AU membership was made by the Peace and Security Council of the AU Commission during its latest meeting on the situation in the Central African country, the AU said in a statement issued late Thursday.

Ethiopia Govt seeks US$12 billion in funding for economic plan

ADDIS ABABA, July 17 (NNN-ALLAFRICA) — The Ethiopian government is looking to raise USD 12 billion in financing to implement its new three-year economic reform plan, according to Teklewold Atnafu, economic advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The funds would come from institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, as well as from restructuring Ethiopia’s debts, Teklewold said.

UNHCR faces critical funding gap to meet needs of refugees in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it has faced a "critical" funding shortfall to address the humanitarian needs of refugees in Ethiopia.

The UN refugee agency said in its latest situation update issued late Friday that its operation in Ethiopia has received 64 million U.S. dollars as of the end of May, representing only 15 percent of the requirements.

UN economic commission hails Ethiopia's imminent securities exchange as "game-changer"

ADDIS ABABA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia's first-ever securities exchange will be a "game-changer" for the country and the region, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) said at a workshop that concluded Friday.

Efforts are underway to develop Ethiopia's financial market as the East African country prepares to launch its first-ever securities exchange over the next two years. The project team of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) launched the capital raises request in May, according to the official Ethiopian News Agency.

Ethiopia: AU Commission chairperson condemns terror attack in western Uganda

ADDIS ABABA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has issued a statement condemning a terror attack in western Uganda that has killed dozens of students.

In a press statement released late Saturday, Faki said he strongly condemns the heinous and shocking terrorist attack by suspected Allied Democratic Force (ADF) militia that targeted a secondary school in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Ethiopia government criticizes WFP, USAID food aid suspension

ADDIS ABABA, June 12 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) — Ethiopia has criticised the suspension of food aid to the country by the United States and the UN World Food Program (WFP). 

Government spokesman Legesse Tulu, called the decision “political” saying the suspension “punishes millions of people”. More than 15% of the country’s population depends on food aid.

On Thursday, USAID, the US government’s international aid agency, announced the suspension of its food aid, denouncing a “widespread and coordinated detour operation”.

Ethiopia: IGAD chief urges conflicting parties in Sudan to cease all hostilities

ADDIS ABABA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Workneh Gebeyehu on Monday called on conflicting parties in Sudan to cease hostilities and resolve the situation through dialogue.

Gebeyehu made the urgent call in his address at the 14th Ordinary Assembly of the IGAD Heads of State and Government, which was held in the Red Sea nation of Djibouti on Monday.

AU Commission calls for cessation of violence in Senegal

ADDIS ABABA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat called for cessation of violence in Senegal.

"The chairperson of the AU Commission is closely following the events in Senegal which have caused deaths. The chairperson strongly condemns such violence and calls for their immediate cessation," the statement released late Friday said.

Faki called on all Senegalese political actors to show restraint from acts that tarnish the image of Senegalese democracy.

Ethiopia: Pain and terror felt by passengers before Boeing Max crashed can be considered, judge rules

(AP) --- Families of passengers who died in the crash of a Boeing 737 Max in Ethiopia can seek damages for the pain and terror suffered by victims in the minutes before the plane flew nose-down into the ground, a federal judge has ruled.

The ruling means that lawyers for the families will be able to call experts to testify about the victims’ pain and suffering before the 2019 crash, which killed everyone on board.
