Russia's Navalny says prison has changed his status to "terrorist"

MOSCOW, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said on Monday that a prison commission had designated him an extremist and a terrorist, but officially no longer regarded him as an escape risk.

Navalny said on Instagram that he had been summoned before a commission at the prison in Vladimir region, east of Moscow, which voted unanimously in favour of the change of status.

UK: Over 1,000 people cross the English Channel in 2 days

11 Oct 2021; MEMO: More than 1,000 people have crossed the English Channel in two days, according to the Home Office.

The Channel is the busiest shipping lane in the world and separates England from France.

On Saturday, the UK rescued 491 people and on Friday 624 people, whilst on those same two days the French authorities stopped 414 people reaching the UK.

Since the start of 2021 17,000 people have crossed the English Channel hoping to seek refuge in England, more than double the amount that crossed last year.

Lavrov having meeting with Serbian president in Belgrade

BELGRADE, October 10: Visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is having a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, TASS reported from the site.

The talks are being held at the presidential palace, where the Russian delegation came immediately after arriving in Belgrade.

At the beginning of the talks, Lavrov and Vucic welcomed each other on the background of the two countries’ flags and continued the meeting behind closed doors.

 

Death toll from methanol poisoning in Russia’s southern Urals up to 34

ORENBURG, October 10. /TASS/: The death toll from methanol poisoning has risen from to 34 in the Orenburg Region, located in the south of the Urals, after two more people died in the recent hours, the press service of the regional government told journalists on Sunday.

Russia: Flights of L-410 planes suspended pending crash probe results

MOSCOW, October 10/TASS/: The Russian Army, Air Force and Navy Volunteer Society (DOSAAF) has suspended all flights of L-410 planes pending the end of the probe into the crash of an L-410 plane in Tatarstan, DOSAAF reported on Sunday.

"On instructions from the chairperson of the Army, Air Force and Navy Volunteer Society, Alexander Kolmakov, all flights of L-410 type planes have been suspended until the end of the probe," it said.

Putin to deliver very important speech at Russian Energy Week - Kremlin spokesman

MOSCOW, October 10. /TASS/: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech at the Russian Energy Week will be very important, his press secretary Dmitry Peskov told TASS on Sunday.

The Kremlin spokesman confirmed that Putin would take part in the Russian Energy Week’s plenary session. "He will deliver an informative and very important speech and then take part in a plenary discussion," he said.

Several Russians removed from US sanction list ahead of Nuland’s visit - diplomat

MOSCOW, October 10. /TASS/: Several Russians have been deleted from the US sanction lists in exchange for Russia’s consent to receive US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday.

Russia Reports Record Daily COVID-19 Death Toll

MOSCOW, Oct 10 (NNN-TASS) – Russia confirmed 968 COVID-19-related fatalities, over the past 24 hours, the highest daily count in the country, bringing the national death toll to 215,453, the official monitoring and response centre said yesterday.

A total of 29,362 new COVID-19 infections were registered, up from 27,246 the day before, taking the nationwide tally to 7,746,718, the centre said, adding that, the number of recoveries increased by 21,049 to 6,840,845.

Spain: Lava blocks the size of buildings falling from La Palma volcano:

LA PALMA, Spain, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Blocks of molten lava as large as three-storey buildings rolled down a hillside on the Spanish island of La Palma on Sunday while a series of tremors shook the ground three weeks after the volcano erupted.

There were 21 seismic movements on Sunday, with the largest measuring 3.8, the Spanish National Geological Institute (ING) said, shaking the ground in the villages of Mazo, Fuencaliente and El Paso.

U.S., Russia lift targeted sanctions to allow Nuland visit - Moscow

MOSCOW, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Russia will allow U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland to visit for talks despite having previously blacklisted her, after Washington agreed to lift a similar restriction placed on a Russian citizen, Moscow said on Sunday.

The U.S. official, who is expected in Moscow from Oct. 11 to 13, visits at a time when political ties between the countries are badly strained. She will meet senior officials to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues, the State Department has said.
