Afghan teen commits suicide in UK after fear of deportation

09 Sep 2021; MEMO: A teenager who arrived in the UK as an unaccompanied minor has committed suicide believing he might be deported back to Afghanistan after his eighteenth birthday.

The 19-year-old, who has not been named on request of his family members who fear for their safety back home, was found dead at home in Birmingham on 21 April.

A senior coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, Louise Hunt, concluded that he committed suicide.

German FM arrives in Libya to reopen country’s embassy

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s foreign minister arrived in Libya on Thursday to reopen the country’s embassy in Tripoli.

“Today, we want to show with the reopening that Germany is and will remain a committed partner of Libya,” Heiko Maas said upon his arrival in Tripoli. “We want to have a voice in the Libyan capital again.”

German diplomats left Libya in 2014 due to the country’s instability and spiraling violence and worked from neighboring Tunisia.

North Macedonia government to meet over deadly hospital fire

SKOPJE, North Macedonia (AP) — North Macedonia’s government will hold an emergency meeting Thursday over a fire overnight that ripped through a field hospital set up to treat COVID-19 patients, leaving at least 14 people dead.

The blaze broke out late Wednesday in the western city of Tetovo, where the hospital had been set up following a recent spike in infections in the region that left local hospitals full.

Ukraine fails appeal to US to grant Kiev status of major non-NATO ally

KIEV, September 8. / TASS /: The Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada)’s resolution to address the US Congress in terms of granting the country the status of a major non-NATO ally (MNNA) did not gain the sufficient support for its adoption.

On Wednesday, at an extraordinary meeting of the Ukrainian parliament, only 24 out of 226 deputies required supported the appeal.

Belgium: EU Council head Michel says discussed Afghanistan with Vladimir Putin

BRUSSELS, September 8. /TASS/: European Council President Charles Michel discussed the situation in Afghanistan with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Michel said in his Twitter Wednesday.

"Discussed with President [of Russia] the recent developments in #Afghanistan and impact on broader region," he said. "The EU and Russia share an interest in regional stability."

Michel noted that the EU considers "preventing a humanitarian disaster, combating terrorism and drug trafficking, and guaranteeing human rights - including those of women, girls and minorities" a priority.

Russian emergencies minister dies at drills in the Arctic when saving life

MOSCOW, September 8. /TASS/: Russian Emergencies Minister Yevgeny Zinichev died during the drills in the Arctic city of Norilsk as he was saving other person’s life, the ministry reported on Wednesday.

"We regret to report that the head of the Emergencies Ministry, Yevgeny Zinichev, tragically died rescuing a human life as he was fulfilling his duty in Norilsk during the inter-agency drills on protecting the Arctic zone from emergency situations," the ministry stated.

Iran has 10kg of 60% enriched uranium: IAEA

08 Sep 2021; MEMO: Iran has produced about ten kilogrammes of uranium enriched to 60 per cent purity, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said yesterday.

The agency condemned what it considered Iran's lack of cooperation in implementing its nuclear programme monitoring mission, saying: "Since February 2021, verification and monitoring activities have been seriously impeded in light of Iran's decision to stop implementing its nuclear commitments" under the 2015 agreement with major international powers.

G20 health ministers agree vaccine confidence measures

London, Sep 7 (PTI) The Health Ministers from G20 countries, including India, have united to pledge global action to improve future health security, increase vaccine confidence and tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in a Health Declaration agreed in Rome.

The G20 Health Ministers' Meeting in Italy this week is focused on building on strong cooperation and collaboration to end the COVID-19 pandemic and support recovery around the world. The Health Declaration was agreed on Monday.

Russian court to consider transferring jailed ex-Marine to U.S. -lawyers

MOSCOW, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A Russian court plans to consider a request by a former U.S. Marine imprisoned in Russia to be transferred to the United States to serve his sentence there, his lawyers said on Wednesday.

Russia convicted Paul Whelan - who holds U.S., British, Canadian and Irish passports - of spying in June 2020 and sentenced him to 16 years in jail. He denied the charge and said he was set up in a sting operation, and Washington has demanded his release.
