IAEA opens conference on nuclear power's role in tackling climate change

VIENNA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Climate change is one of the greatest challenges to the world, but reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be difficult to achieve without a significant increase in the use of nuclear power, according to the acting chief of UN nuclear watchdog at a conference held here on Monday.

London police arrest 21 climate activists; protests heat up

LONDON (AP) — London Police say they’ve arrested 21 climate change activists over the past few days as the Extinction Rebellion group attempts to draw attention to global warming.

The capital’s Metropolitan Police say the arrests on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance took place Saturday and Sunday.

The arrests come as protesters in Berlin and Amsterdam blocked roads ahead of what is being described as widespread demonstrations. Further protests are taking place Monday in London.

Moscow Issues Protest Over FBI Interrogation Of Russian MP

MOSCOW, Oct 7 (NNN-TASS) – The Russian Foreign Ministry said, it had issued a strong protest to the United States, with regard to the detention and interrogation of a Russian parliament member, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“We declare a strong protest in connection with the actions of the U.S. authorities … This is another hostile action against Russia and its representatives, clearly aimed at further worsening the atmosphere of Russian-American relations,” the ministry said in a statement.

3 scientists given Nobel Prize for cell research

The 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to scientists William G. Kaelin, Jr, Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza.

They received the award jointly for their discoveries of “how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability,” the Nobel Committee announced Monday.

It is the 110th prize in the category that has been awarded since 1901.

Portugal’s Socialists prepare 4 more years in government

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The center-left Socialist Party got the most votes in Portugal’s general election Sunday, leaving it poised to continue leading the government for another four years.

With 226 seats in the 230-seat parliament awarded in the official count, the Socialists reached 106 seats, compared with 77 for the second-place Social Democratic Party.

The parliament chooses a government, usually taken from the party that has the most lawmakers.

Ukrainian president discusses East Ukraine disengagement with defense chiefs

KIEV, October 6. /TASS/: Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Saturday met with heads of security and defense agencies to discuss the disengagement of troops in Eastern Ukraine, his press service said.

According to the press service, the president met with Chief of the General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ruslan Khomchak, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov and Foreign Minister Vadim Pristayko on Saturday.

20 injured in tourist bus accident near Nizhny Novgorod

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, October 6. / TASS /: Twenty people were injured as a result of a tourist bus accident in the Gaginsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the press service of the Ministry of Emergencies in the region told reporters on Sunday.

"In the Gaginsky district near the village of Panovo-Osanovo, a tourist bus turned over. According to the preliminary data, there are no casualties, twenty people were injured," the press service said.

Short circuit sparks fears of fire at Russian Foreign Ministry — rescuers

MOSCOW, October 6. /TASS/: The smoke at the Russian Foreign Ministry's office, to which Moscow fire crews responded earlier on Saturday evening, was caused by a short circuit that had not led to a fire, a spokesperson for the Russian emergencies ministry said on Saturday.

"An examination established that a short circuit occurred, but no fire followed. There were no reports of injuries. All crews are returning back to their bases," the emergencies ministry’s Moscow office said.

No specifics on meeting between Putin and Trump at APEC summit - Peskov

MOSCOW, October 6. / TASS /: There are no specifics regarding the possible meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Chile in November, said Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Sunday, while answering a question whether a meeting between the two leaders in any format is possible.

"There is nothing specific about this yet," Peskov said.

Earlier, President Putin expressed the hope that he would be able to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as part of the APEC summit.
