Feb 5 (Reuters) - The Canadian government said on Sunday it deployed a military aircraft over Haiti to address what it called a "dire security situation" and to support efforts to disrupt the activities of Haitian gangs.

Canada said in a statement that it supports the Haitian National Police and deployed a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft in response to Haiti's request for support as violence continues to escalate in the country.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 4 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Seven gang members were killed amid clashes with Haitian Police (PNH) after Operation Tornado 1 being announced to curb national insecurity.    

A week after law enforcement officers started off their operations, one assault rifle and four pistols were seized, and police were able to recover a truckload of merchandise confiscated by criminal groups.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Nov 23 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Haiti´s cholera outbreak has killed 176 people so far, while 9,682 are suspected of being infected, according to Health Ministry´s latest report.    

Plus, 843 cases were reported in nine of Haiti’s 10 departments, and over 8,450 people have been treated in healthcare centers.

Past week, ¨Doctors Without Borders¨ organization warned that Haiti´s healthcare centers will soon reach their maximum capacity, treating about 270 people per day, five times more than during the first two weeks of the new outbreak.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Canada has sanctioned former Haitian President Michel Martelly and two former prime ministers for financing gangs, Canadian authorities said on Sunday, the latest in a series of measures targeting alleged backers of Haitian criminal groups.

In September, Haitian gangs created a humanitarian crisis by blocking a fuel terminal for nearly six weeks, halting most economic activity and triggering U.N. discussion of a possible foreign strike force to open the terminal.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti’s government has agreed to request the help of international armed forces as gangs and protesters paralyze the country and basic supplies including fuel and water dwindle, a top ranking Haitian official told The Associated Press on Friday.

The official, who was not authorized to speak about the issue publicly, said a formal request in writing has not yet been submitted.

It wasn’t clear if the request would mean the activation of United Nations peacekeeping troops, whose mission ended five years ago after a troubled 11 years in Haiti.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The international community pledged $600 million Wednesday to help rebuild Haiti’s devastated south, where an earthquake killed more than 2,200 people six months ago.

  “These contributions went well above our expectations,” said Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, after the conclusion of an international summit in Port-au-Prince.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A truck carrying gasoline overturned and exploded in a fireball in northern Haiti, engulfing cars and homes in flames as it killed more than 50 people and injured dozens of others in the latest disaster to hit a country whose troubles deepened greatly this year.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Dec 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Three people who were among a group of US and Canadian missionaries kidnapped by an armed gang in Haiti have been released, according to their organisation.

Christian Aid Ministries said the three were safe and seemed in good spirits.

Two others were freed last month, but their identities were not made public.

Sixteen Americans and one Canadian were abducted in mid-October after they visited an orphanage in an area run by a powerful criminal gang.
