Over 23 million Afghans face food insecurity: UN spokesman

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 06 (APP): Nearly 23 million people, or 55 per cent of the Afghan population, are estimated to be in crisis or experiencing emergency levels of food insecurity between now and March of next year, a UN spokesperson has said.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, also pointed to reports that isolated clashes and violence affecting civilians and resulting in casualties continued countrywide this week.

USA: CIA chief visited Moscow to warn Russia over troop buildup near Ukraine, CNN says

NEW YORK, November 6. /TASS/: CIA director William Burns visited Moscow in order to let Russia know that the US was closely monitoring the alleged buildup of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. As CNN reported on Friday, citing its sources, the US intelligence chief was supposed to determine what was motivating Russia’s actions.

According to CNN, during meetings in Moscow, the CIA’s chief tried to warn Russia against any plans for an offensive, stressing that the US closely monitors all the movements of Russian troops.

UN Security Council calls for end to Ethiopia hostilities

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council called for an end to the intensifying and expanding conflict in Ethiopia on Friday, and for unhindered access for humanitarian aid to tackle the world’s worst hunger crisis in a decade in the war-torn Tigray region.

The U.N.’s most powerful body expressed serious concern about the impact of the conflict on “the stability of the country and the wider region,” and called on all parties to refrain “from inflammatory hate speech and incitement to violence and divisiveness.”

USA: Prosecutor in Andrew Cuomo’s groping case seeks more time

UN chief condemns attack injuring 10 peacekeepers in CAR

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday strongly condemned the attack by members of the presidential guard of the Central African Republic (CAR) which wounded 10 peacekeepers.

Through a statement attributable to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief "emphasizes that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime. He calls on the Central African authorities to spare no effort in investigating and promptly holding accountable the perpetrators of this unacceptable attack."

At UN, Pakistani youth delegate makes clarion call for settling Kashmir dispute

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 03 (APP): A Pakistani youth delegate has urged the U.N. to resolve the Kashmir dispute according to the Security Council resolutions that promised Kashmiris their right of self-determination, and to hold India accountable for human rights abuses in the dispute territory.

“As the voice of Kashmiri youth, I implore the international community to come forward and play its effective role,” Muzdalfa Ahmed, the youth delegate, told the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, which deals with social, cultural and humanitarian issues.
