UN Security Council condemns attack on UN peacekeeping mission in DRC

UNITED NATIONS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council strongly condemned Monday's attack on the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which killed one Malawian blue helmet.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the victim, the Malawian authorities and the UN in a press statement.

U.S. attempt to contain China by using Xinjiang issue is doomed to fail -- Chinese UN mission

UNITED NATIONS, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to a side event to be organized by the United States, Britain, Germany and a few nongovernmental organizations in New York on the human rights situation in Xinjiang, China.

The spokesperson urged the co-sponsors to cancel this event, which interferes in China's internal affairs, and called on other UN member states to reject the event.

UN Chief Expresses Deep Concern Over Violence In Occupied East Jerusalem

UNITED NATIONS, May 10 (NNN-PNN) – United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, yesterday expressed deep concern over the continuing violence in occupied East Jerusalem.

He was also worried about the possible evictions of Palestinian families from their homes, in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighbourhoods, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN chief, in a statement.

According to the statement, the UN chief urged Israel to cease demolitions and evictions, in line with its obligations under international humanitarian and international human rights law.

USA: Amazon blocked 10 billion listings in counterfeit crackdown

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon, which has been under pressure from shoppers, brands and lawmakers to crack down on counterfeits on its site, said Monday that it blocked more than 10 billion suspected phony listings last year before any of their offerings could be sold.

The numbers were released in Amazon’s first report on its anti-counterfeiting efforts since it announced new tools and technologies in 2019. The number of blocked phony listings last year was up about 67% from the year before.

Cyberattack on US pipeline is linked to criminal gang

NEW YORK (AP) — The cyberextortion attempt that has forced the shutdown of a vital U.S. pipeline was carried out by a criminal gang known as DarkSide that cultivates a Robin Hood image of stealing from corporations and giving a cut to charity, two people close to the investigation said Sunday.

The shutdown, meanwhile, stretched into its third day, with the Biden administration loosening regulations for the transport of petroleum products on highways as part of an “all-hands-on-deck” effort to avoid disruptions in the fuel supply.

UN leaders slam deadly Kabul school bombing

UNITED NATIONS, May 09 (APP): United Nations leaders have strongly condemned Saturday’s deadly bombing outside a high school in Kabul in which at least 30 people, including schoolchildren, were killed and many more severely injured.

Most of the casualties were reported to be girls, who were leaving the building at the end of the school day. According to media reports, the city was full of shoppers, ahead of the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations.

USA: Three hurt in shooting in New York’s Times Square

NEW YORK, May 9. /TASS/: At least three people were injured in a shooting in New York’s Times Square, NBC TV channel reported citing police.

According to the law enforcement agencies, two women and a child were hurt and were rushed to a hospital. Their wounds are not life-threatening.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea told reporters those injured in the shooting were passers-by, who had not been involved in the initial dispute.

UN honors 336 personnel killed in line of duty last year

UNITED NATIONS, May 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — The United Nations paused on Thursday to honor 336 personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2020, the highest number ever in a single year.

The memorial ceremony, held online, paid tribute to civilian and uniformed staff who died because of malicious acts, natural disasters and other incidents.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its wider impacts, including on healthcare access, the number also included colleagues who passed from the disease or other illness.
