He also called for the UN to put pressure on the Israeli occupation to "implement all the international resolutions related to Palestinians and stop all Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people."

USA: Stocks rise as Wall Street steadies following omicron slide

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street steadied itself Monday after last week’s stock market slide caused by the newest coronavirus variant, with investors now waiting for more clues about just how much damage it may do to the economy.

The S&P 500 rose 1.3% to recover more than half of its drop from Friday, which was its worst since February. Bond yields and crude oil also recovered chunks of what they lost in traders’ knee-jerk reaction to run toward safety and away from risky investments.

NEW YORK (AP) — With an expanded definition to reflect the times, Merriam-Webster has declared an omnipresent truth as its 2021 word of the year: vaccine.

“This was a word that was extremely high in our data every single day in 2021,” Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster’s editor-at-large, told The Associated Press ahead of Monday’s announcement.

U.S. paying for Trump's tariff policy on China: report

NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The United States is still paying for former President Donald Trump's tariff policy towards China, The New York Times has reported.

In an opinion piece published recently, the American daily newspaper pointed out that "instead of making long-term investments to help companies to compete, however, the government has decided to limit competition, a lazy approach that is both expensive and counterproductive."

Taxing imports from China seems to punish China, but actually the cost of the tariffs is paid by Americans, said the report.

UN health agency urges caution over travel bans linked to new coronavirus variant

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 26 (APP): The World Health Organization, a Geneva-based UN agency, has urged all countries to adopt a risk-based and scientific approach to travel bans linked to a new coronavirus variant identified in South Africa and Botswana.

The development on Friday came as a World Health Organization (WHO) panel prepared to meet to assess the potential impact of a new coronavirus variant identified as B 1.1.529.

According to WHO’s COVID-19 technical expert, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the information is still limited.

USA: Violence against refugee women surged in 2020: UNHCR

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 26 (APP): One in five refugee or internally displaced women have faced sexual violence, and the situation continues to worsen globally, the UN refugee agency, (UNHCR), said Friday.


On the 30th anniversary of the campaign for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the UN agency said that there’s been a global surge in domestic violence, child marriages, trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse since March.

US calls on Security Council to sanction anyone who obstructs Libyan elections

25 Nov 2021; MEMO: The United States called on the UN Security Council on Tuesday to "impose sanctions" on any "Libyan or non-Libyan person" who undermines the elections scheduled for 24 December, Anadolu has reported.

"We remind those who interfere in Libyan elections or fuel violence that the Security Council may impose sanctions on anyone — Libyan or otherwise — who obstructs or undermines the upcoming elections next month," said Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, Deputy US Ambassador to the UN.

USA: Stocks wobble, oil prices rise despite release of crude

(AP) --- Stocks wobbled in choppy trading on Wall Street Tuesday as gains from banks and energy companies tempered losses from communications and technology companies.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2% as of 11:42 a.m. Eastern. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 50 points, or 0.1%, to 35,669 and the Nasdaq fell 1%.

Bond yields edged higher. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.66% from 1.63% late Monday. That helped send banks higher. Bank of America rose 2.3%.
