US unrest: Two New York police shot and wounded, one knifed, while on duty to stop looting

NEW YORK, June 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A man armed with a knife stabbed a New York policeman in the neck on Wednesday and two officers who ran to his rescue were wounded before they shot the attacker multiple times, police said.

All four were taken to Kings County Hospital where the officers were in stable condition and the suspect was in critical condition, police said.

The attack in Brooklyn came amid mass protests and some rioting in New York over the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, while in the custody of white police officers.

UN Security Council extends mandate of Darfur mission, sets up follow-on presence

UNITED NATIONS, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday announced the adoption of two separate resolutions to extend the mandate of the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) for two months, and to set up a follow-on presence in Sudan.

Resolution 2525 decides to extend UNAMID's mandate till Dec. 31, 2020, and further decides that UNAMID shall maintain its current troop and police ceiling during this period.

UN rights chief alarmed by clampdown on press freedom in India during coronavirus crisis

UNITED NATIONS, June 04 (APP): UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has expressed alarm at the clampdown on freedom of expression in India and 11 other countries in the Asia-Pacific region during the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement issued in Geneva on Wednesday, she said that any action the authorities take to stop the spread of false information must adhere to the principles of legality, necessity, proportionality, adding that “in these times of great uncertainty”, citizens had a right to voice their concerns.

Officer stabbed, 2 shot in Brooklyn, hours into NYC curfew

NEW YORK (AP) — A confrontation in Brooklyn late Wednesday left one police officer stabbed in the neck, two officers with gunshot wounds to their hands and another man shot by police, the New York Police Department said.

The officers were taken to a hospital with wounds that were not expected to be life-threatening, the department said. The condition of the man shot by police was not immediately released.

NEW YORK, June 02 (APP): At least 200 serious attacks on individual journalists have taken place during six years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule resulting in the killing of 40 of them, according to a recent study cited in a Washington Post article, which portrays India as “one of the world’s deadliest places to practice journalism.”

“And,” the Post’s Global Opinions writer, Jason Rezaian, warned that “it’s only getting worse”.

US unrest: New York under curfew as looters hit luxury stores

NEW YORK, June 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — New York was placed under a night curfew, officials said, after looters raided stores in central Manhattan, targeting some of the city’s top retailers.

Upmarket fashion store Michael Kors on Fifth Avenue was among the luxury outlets hit, along with Nike, Lego and electronics shops across Midtown, before the 11 pm to 5 am curfew came into effect.

Groups of young people moved from block to block around the district, usually bustling with tourists but deserted due to the coronavirus, with entire streets blocked by police.
