‘Please come help us’: New York begs for medical workers

NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s governor urgently appealed for medical volunteers Monday amid a “staggering” number of coronavirus deaths, as he and health officials warned that the crisis unfolding in New York City is just a preview of what other U.S. communities could soon face.

“Please come help us in New York now,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as the state’s death toll climbed by more than 250 people in a day to a total of over 1,200, most of them in the city. He said an additional 1 million health care workers are needed to tackle the crisis.

UNDP seeks unprecedented COVID-19 support for vulnerable countries

UNITED NATIONS, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday urged the international community to help vulnerable countries to get over the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This pandemic is a health crisis, but not just a health crisis. For vast swathes of the globe, the pandemic will leave deep, deep scars," said UNDP administrator Achim Steiner.

New York state surpasses 1,000 coronavirus deaths

NEW YORK (AP) — New York state’s death toll from the coronavirus outbreak climbed Sunday above 1,000, less than a month after the first known infection in the state.

Most of those deaths have come in just the past few days.

New York City reported in the evening that its toll had risen to 776. The total number of statewide deaths isn’t expected to be released until Monday, but with at least 250 additional deaths recorded outside the city as of Sunday morning, the state’s total fatalities was at least 1,026.

NEW YORK (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak could kill 100,000 to 200,000 Americans, the U.S. government’s top infectious-disease expert warned on Sunday as family members described wrenching farewells through hospital windows with dying loved ones.

Faced with that grim projection and the possibility even more could die in the U.S. without measures to keep people away from one another, President Donald Trump extended federal guidelines recommending people stay home for another 30 days until the end of April to prevent the spread of the virus.

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 28 (APP): The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for support to those suffering from invisible impacts of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, including women and girls whose access to life-saving sexual and reproductive health care may be disrupted.

In a statement, Executive Director of the UN sexual and reproductive health agency, Dr. Natalia Kanem, said the Fund’s work is ramping up even as the novel coronavirus continues to test health care systems around the world.

For caseworkers, the potential toll is physical and emotional. Child welfare workers in several states, including Michigan, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Russia suggests UNGA adopt declaration on fight against coronavirus

UNITED NATIONS, March 28. /TASS/: Russia has submitted an initiative to the United Nations General Assembly that a declaration on global cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus be adopted, the Russian mission to the UN said in a statement on its website.

"On 26 March 2020 the Russian Federation submitted to the UN General Assembly an initiative to adopt a UNGA Declaration on solidarity in countering the coronavirus," the statement reads.

Chinese envoy briefs UN member states on work of Security Council in face of COVID-19

UNITED NATIONS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, in his capacity as president of the Security Council for the month of March, attended a virtual joint briefing by the UN principal organs to member states on COVID-19 response.

COVID-19 is posing huge challenges to the operation of UN organs, including the Security Council, which has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, said Zhang.
