India: Female student serious, 70 others unwell at Kanpur medical college

Kanpur: Above 70 medical students on campus have been suffering from fever after 16 pigs were found dead at GSVM Medical College.

Condition of a female student has become critical and been in a coma since Wednesday morning. She has been put on a ventilator.

Another 5 students got sick and have been admitted to the hospital.

Media in-charge of the college, Dr Ganesh Shankar said that samples have been sent to Lucknow for  analysis of Japanese encephalitis.

Indian refiners pay dollars for Russian oil after dirham attempts fail

NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Indian companies are still buying Russian oil using dollars after Dubai's Mashreq Bank declined to handle payments from at least two refiners in Emirati Dirhams as requested by the supplier, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Russia has been hit by sanctions from the United States and allies following its invasion of Ukraine, and Moscow has requested some buyers of its commodities pay using roubles or other currencies than the dollar and euro which its contracts are typically priced in.

Tata Motors launches $10,000 electric car in India to further its lead

NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) launched India's lowest priced electric car at a little over $10,000 on Wednesday as the country's only electric vehicle (EV) maker looks to draw in more buyers.

Tata leads India's EV market, helped by government subsidies and high tariffs on imports.

Its move comes as domestic rival Mahindra & Mahindra (MAHM.NS) is in talks with investors to raise up to $500 million for its EV unit and plans to launch its first electric sport-utility vehicle (SUV) in January. 

India: PCB acts against seven tanneries polluting around airport

Kanpur: As many as seven tanneries were closed in Pyodi area here. It is the place where airport has been built. 

As reported the leather put for drying used to invite birds thereby hampering the smooth flying of aircraft.

All the tanneries were installed in areas around the Chakeri airport wall here.

Actually, the leather prepared in these tanneries was put outside for drying. The aircraft flying over was getting affected due to presence of birds.

India: Another 150 people allegedly linked with PFI held across seven states

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) More than 150 people allegedly linked with the Popular Front of India (PFI) were detained or arrested in raids across seven states on Tuesday, five days after a similar pan India crackdown against the group often accused of being linked to radical Islam.

Conducted mostly by state police teams, the raids were spread across Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, Assam and Madhya Pradesh.

Saab to set up manufacturing facility in India for Carl-Gustaf weapons system

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) In a significant move, Swedish defence major Saab on Tuesday announced that it will set up a manufacturing facility in India for production of its Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon systems.

It will be the company's first manufacturing facility for the Carl-Gustaf M4 outside Sweden.

The production of the shoulder-fired weapons having a range of 1,500 metres will start in 2024, said Gorgen Johansson, Saab's senior vice president.

Kanpur: The weather was sunny in the morning but after 11 a.m. it rained in some parts of the city. While some parts of the city areas remained dry.

However, clouds still continue over the whole of the city.

India: Court allows ED one-week police custody of three Delhi unit PFI functionaries

New Delhi, Sep 24 (PTI) A court here has allowed the Enforcement Directorate seven days' custody of three Delhi unit functionaries of the Popular Front of India (PFI) for their alleged role in money laundering in the guise of cash donations.

The court was hearing the ED's application seeking remand for two weeks of the three accused - Perwez Ahmad, president of PFI Delhi, Mohd. Ilias, general secretary of the Delhi unit and its office secretary Abdul Muqeet.

India: High NPAs in education loan segment turn banks cautious

New Delhi, Sep 25 (PTI) High defaults of about 8 per cent in the education loan portfolio have made banks cautious and go slow on the sanction of such credit.

Non-performing assets (NPAs) in the education loan category including public sector banks' (PSBs) were 7.82 per cent at the end of June quarter of the current financial year. Outstanding education loans were about Rs 80,000 crore at June-end.
