India: Farmer unions call for Bharat bandh (clouser) on March 26

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI) Farmer unions on Wednesday called for a Bharat bandh on March 26, when their protest at Delhi's borders against the Centre's three new farm laws completes four months.

Farmer leader Buta Singh Burjgill said farmers along with trade unions will protest the hike in fuel prices and privatisation of railways on March 15.

Mauritania: ex-president in court on corruption charges

10 Mar 2021; MEMO: The former President of Mauretania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, appeared in court yesterday on corruption charges, one of more than a hundred defendants including former officials. There was tight security around the Palace of Justice in Nouakchott for the appearance.

There was also tight security at the National Security Department, the headquarters of the economic crime police, which over the past months have been investigating the case against Ould Abdel Aziz.

India: Delhi High Court stays ED summons to Mehbooba Mufti

New Delhi, Mar 10 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave an interim stay on summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate to former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, her daughter said.

The matter came up for hearing before a division bench of Justices Siddarth Mridul and Hairam Bhambhani. The matter was posted for March 18 with a direction to the ED not to press for her personal appearance on March 15.

India: Mamata files nomination from Nandigram assembly seat

Haldia (WB), Mar 10 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination from the high-profile Nandigram assembly seat, where she will be pitted against her former protege and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Accompanied by party president Subrata Bakshi, Banerjee filed her papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office here, after taking part in a 2-km roadshow.

India: Delhi will bid for 2048 Olympic Games: CM Kejriwal

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Delhi government aims to host the 2048 Olympic Games and it will create whatever infrastructure and facilities required for it, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday.

Delhi hosted the first Asian Games in 1951, and the ninth edition in 1982. In 2010, the national capital had hosted the Commonwealth Games.

"Delhi will bid for the 2048 Olympic games. We will create whatever infrastructure and other facilities are required for it," Kejriwal said during a post-budget press conference.

India: Farmer leaders to visit poll-bound West Bengal, Assam

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farmer unions protesting against the Centre's three agri laws, on Tuesday said it would send a team of leaders to the poll-bound West Bengal and Assam in a bid to appeal to voters not to vote for the "anti-farmer" BJP.

Farmer leader Darshan Pal said in a statement that the visit will be spread over three days starting from March 12.

Pal told PTI that the team will have 4-5 people including him and Yogendra Yadav.

India: Editors Guild expresses shock at GoM report on media

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI) The Editors Guild of India (EGI) on Tuesday expressed "shock and disbelief" at the recent report of a group of ministers (GoM) suggesting steps to "neutralise" the negative narrative against the government.

It said the GoM report illustrates government's "increasingly draconian attitude" against any critique and inquiry by the press.

Iran rejects blame for Israeli Embassy attack in Delhi

08 Mar 2021; MEMO: Iran has dismissed reports of its involvement in a recent low-intensity explosion near the Israeli mission in the Indian capital, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a detailed statement on Monday, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi rejected what it said were "unsubstantiated allegations," offering to cooperate with Indian authorities in the probe.

Libyan parliament convenes to vote on new government

The Libyan parliament's session kicked off on Monday in Sirte for a vote of confidence on the new interim government, Anadolu Agency reported.

The session began in the presence of 132 deputies – out of a total of 200 – chaired by Speaker of Parliament Aguila Saleh.

"Thank God, we meet today in Sirte to turn the page on division," Saleh said.

Earlier Monday, Libya's Prime Minister-designate Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh arrived in the coastal city of Sirte to present his unity government lineup to the House of Representatives.

India: Rajya Sabha washout over rising fuel prices

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI) The Opposition's continuous uproar and persistent demand for a discussion on the increase in petrol, diesel and LPG prices on Monday led to washout of the day's proceedings in Rajya Sabha.

The upper house which met for the first time in the second part of the Budget Session saw repeated adjournments as the Opposition continued protests inside the House.
