Malatsian PM wants NAM to help smaller nations in war against COVID-19

PUTRAJAYA, May 5 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday night called on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to help smaller nations in the war against COVID-19.

Malaysia, he said, believes that NAM must play a more significant role to champion access and acquisition for smaller nations in obtaining medical supplies, medications and vaccine once they are developed.

NAM leaders unite in the fight against COVID-19

BAKU, May 5 (NNN-AZERTAC) — The heads of member countries of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) came together via a video conference today to address the ongoing global COVID-19 crisis.

The summit, initiated by current NAM chairman Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, took off here today as the leaders joined the meet under the body’s Contact Group format for the meet themed “United against COVID-19”.

Ilham Aliyev made the opening speech at the Summit followed by an address from the President of the United Nations General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.

Taiwan rebuffs WHO, says China has no right to represent it

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Only Taiwan’s democratically-elected government can represent its people on the world stage, not China, its foreign ministry said on Tuesday, calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to “cast off” China’s control during the coronavirus pandemic.

Taiwan’s exclusion from WHO, due to China’s objections which considers the island one of its provinces, has infuriated Taipei, which says this has created a dangerous gap in the global fight against the coronavirus.

Indonesia's first-quarter GDP growth weakest since 2001, recession looms

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia’s economy grew at its weakest pace since 2001 in the first quarter, as the coronavirus pandemic halted business activity in Southeast Asia’s largest economy and fuelled expectations of a looming recession.

SINGAPORE: Oil prices extend gains on demand hopes as lockdowns ease

SINGAPORE/MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Oil prices jumped again on Tuesday on hopes for a recovery in vehicle traffic and fuel demand, as some U.S. states and countries in Europe and Asia start to ease coronavirus lockdown measures.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude CLc1 futures surged 9.9%, or $2.01, to $22.40 per barrel as of 0705 GMT. The U.S. benchmark has now risen for five sessions in a row.

Brent crude LCOc1 futures were up 6.9%, or $1.87, at $29.07, rising for a sixth straight day.

Japan extends state of emergency until May 31 for COVID-19 fight

TOKYO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government on Monday officially announced its decision to extend the nationwide state of emergency for COVID-19 by nearly a month until May 31.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made the announcement at a meeting of a government task force on the coronavirus response to extend the state of emergency beyond May 6, the last day of Japan's Golden Week holiday which was the initial expiration date.

Japan To Restart Some Public Facilities After State Of Emergency Extended

TOKYO, May 4 (NNN-NHK) – Japan will restart parks, museums, libraries and some other public facilities, after a nationwide state of emergency is expected to be extended, a senior government official said on Sunday.

Japanese Economic Revitalisation Minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, told a press conference that the government will allow those facilities to reopen, if sufficient measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are put in place, even in areas with a relatively high number of infections.
