Founder of South Korea church at center of virus outbreak regrets 'great calamity'

SEOUL/GAPYEONG, South Korea (Reuters) - The founder of the church at the center of South Korea’s coronavirus outbreak apologized on Monday after one of its members tested positive for the virus and infected many others, calling the epidemic a “great calamity”.

South Korea reported 599 new cases on Monday, taking its national tally to 4,335. There have been 26 deaths.

Think-tank report on Uighur labor in China lists global brands

BEIJING (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of ethnic Uighurs were moved to work in conditions suggestive of “forced labor” in factories across China supplying 83 global brands, an Australian think tank said in a report released on Sunday.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) report, which cited government documents and local media reports, identified a network of at least 27 factories in nine Chinese provinces where more than 80,000 Uighurs from the western region of Xinjiang have been transferred.

Hong Kong police get protective upgrade to fight threat of 'local terrorism'

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong, grappling months of sometimes violent anti-government unrest, is to spend about HK$500 million ($64.3 million) on police protective equipment, including six armored vehicles, to help combat the threat of “local terrorism”.

Police chief Chris Tang was speaking on Monday after the government announced in its budget last week that police funding would be HK$25.8 billion, up 25 percent from the previous year, drawing widespread criticism from pro-democracy activists.

Over 10,000 Military Medics Working In Wuhan, In COVID-19 Fight

BEIJING, Mar 2 (NNN-XINHUA) – Nearly 3,000 beds have been set up by 63 military hospitals, designated to treat patients with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), with over 10,000 military medics working at the front line, a military official said today (Monday).

As of Sunday, the designated hospitals of the armed forces and military medical teams, dispatched to the virus-hit Hubei Province, had treated 4,450 COVID-19 patients, with 1,000 cured, said Chen Jingyuan, a health official with the Logistic Support Department of the Central Military Commission, in Beijing.

Malaysia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, Khazanah, records profit of 7.36 billion

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah, on Monday (today), reported a turnaround in overall performance for 2019, with record profits of 7.36 billion ringgit (1.75 billion U.S. dollars) from operations, contributed by higher divestment gains and lower impairments, and robust portfolio returns.

The group said, it achieved an operating profit in 2019, against a loss of 6.27 billion ringgit (1.49 billion U.S. dollars) in 2018. It also declared a dividend of one billion ringgit (0.24 billion U.S. dollars) for 2019.

N Korea Fires Two Unidentified Projectiles Into Eastern Waters

SEOUL, Mar 2 (NNN-YONHAP) – The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), fired two unidentified projectiles into the eastern waters on Monday (today), according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The JCS said that, the projectiles were launched near the DPRK’s east coastal town of Wonsan, towards the East Sea at about 12:37 p.m. local time (0337 GMT).

Southern Thailand Peace Talks To Resume In KL On March 4

PATTANI, March 2 (NNN-Bernama) — The second round of the Southern Thailand peace talks will go on as scheduled this week despite the change of government in Malaysia.

A Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) source said the meeting, to be held on March 4, will see Malaysia’s former Inspector-General of Police Rahim Mohd Noor facilitating the negotiations between the government of Thailand – headed by Gen Wanlop Rungsanaoh – and the BRN.

“Now, everyone is in Kuala Lumpur and is preparing for negotiations this time around,” the BRN source told Bernama when contacted.

Philippines not seeking new military pact with U.S.: presidential spokesman

MANILA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has not authorized any new negotiations to forge a new military pact that will replace the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said Sunday.

Panelo reiterated Duterte does not want a new military deal with the U.S., adding that the Philippine leader is determined to terminate the VFA.

Disgruntled ex-guard takes dozens of hostages in Manila mall

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police on Monday surrounded a shopping mall in an upscale section of Manila after a recently dismissed security guard opened fire and took dozens of people hostage, an official said.

Mayor Francis Zamora of the Philippine capital’s San Juan area said the gunman shot one person at the V-Mall. The victim was in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Zamora said a negotiator was trying to talk to the gunman — a disgruntled former security guard at the shopping complex — inside a mall administration office.

One worker at a time, virus-hit China's factories sputter back online

1 March 2020; AFP: The Xuda Shoes Company is usually bustling at this time of year, with workers having long returned from a Lunar New Year holiday in their hometowns to kick-start production of tens of thousands of shoes daily.

But China's coronavirus epidemic has changed all that.

Only about one-third of the roughly 1,000-strong workforce at Xuda's factory in the eastern export hub of Wenzhou are around, the rest blocked by virus-induced travel disruptions and safety measures.
