Man pleads not guilty to murder of 19 at Japan care home

8 January 2020; AFP: The man accused of murdering 19 disabled people at a Japanese care home in one of the country's worst mass killings pleaded not guilty Wednesday as his trial began.

Satoshi Uematsu, a former employee of the care centre outside Tokyo, did not dispute his involvement in the 2016 stabbing rampage during his first court appearance on charges including murder.

S.Korea to push for inter-Korean cooperation as much as it can: unification ministry

SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- South Korea would push for inter-Korean cooperation as much as it can, while continuing efforts to resolve issues on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Seoul's unification ministry said Wednesday.

Lee Sang-min, unification ministry spokesman, told a press briefing that South Korea, as a party directly involved in the Korean Peninsula issues, will expand room for maneuvers in relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

China successfully launches new communication technology experiment satellite

XICHANG, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China sent a new communication technology experiment satellite into space from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province at 11:20 p.m. (Beijing Time), Tuesday.

The satellite has entered the preset orbit. It will be used in communication, radio, television and data transmission, as well as high throughput technology test.

The satellite was launched on a Long March-3B carrier rocket. It was the 324th mission for the Long March series carrier rockets.

Oil up, stocks down after Iran missile attack on US troops

BEIJING (AP) — Oil prices rose and Asian stock markets fell Wednesday after Iran fired missiles at U.S. bases in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of an Iranian general.

Brent crude futures, the benchmark for international oils, spiked more than $3 per barrel in London before retreating.

Tokyo’s stock market benchmark fell nearly 2% before recovering some of its losses and Hong Kong’ was off 1%. Shanghai, Australia and Southeast Asian markets also retreated.

“Investors appear to be pricing for an all-out war,” Jingyi Pan of IG said in a report.

Philippines orders evacuation of Filipinos from Iraq

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine government said Wednesday that it has ordered the mandatory evacuation of Filipino workers from Iraq and the coast guard said it is sending a vessel to the Middle East to ferry its citizens to safety in case hostilities between the United States and Iran worsen.

Japan issues arrest warrant for Ghosn's wife, looks for ways to bring him back

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo prosecutors on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Carlos Ghosn’s wife Carole for allegedly lying in testimony, as officials sought ways to bring the fugitive car industry boss back for trial on financial misconduct charges.

The perjury arrest warrant accuses Carole Ghosn of falsely claiming not to know, or to have met, people connected to a company that received payments from Nissan Motor, part of which it subsequently transferred to a firm owned by Ghosn.

Magnitude 6.2 quake strikes near Indonesia’s Aceh province

BANDA ACEH (Sumatra, Indonesia), Jan 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck southwest of Indonesia’s Aceh province on the island of Sumatra on Tuesday at a depth of 20.3 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency said on Twitter that the quake had magnitude 6.4 and a depth of 13km, adding that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

S.Korea's top security adviser leaves for Washington for talks on Korean Peninsula issues: media

SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) - South Korea's top national security adviser on Tuesday left for Washington for consultations on the Korean Peninsula issues with his U.S. and Japanese counterparts, according to Yonhap news agency.

Chung Eui-yong, the top national security adviser for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, was quoted as saying at the Incheon International Airport, west of the capital Seoul, that the scheduled consultations were reported in the media though it was originally to be held closed-door.

S.Korea's Moon offers DPRK broader inter-Korean cooperation in 2020

SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday offered a broader inter-Korean cooperation this year to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), while proposing concerted efforts to create conditions for top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un's visit to Seoul.

"It is very sorry that a bigger advance has not been made in inter-Korean cooperation for the past year," Moon said during his televised New Year's speech at the presidential complex Blue House.

US strike on Iran could have consequences in North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The U.S. strike that killed Iran’s top military commander may have had an indirect casualty: a diplomatic solution to denuclearizing North Korea.

Experts say the escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran will diminish already fading hopes for such an outcome and inspire North Korea’s decision-makers to tighten their hold on the weapons they see, perhaps correctly, as their strongest guarantee of survival.
