Indonesia capital floods leave 43 dead, 397,000 displaced

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — The death toll from floods in Indonesia’s capital rose to 43 of Friday as rescuers found more bodies amid receding floodwaters, disaster officials said.

Monsoon rains and rising rivers submerged at least 182 neighborhoods in greater Jakarta and caused landslides in the Bogor and Depok districts on the city’s outskirts, which buried a dozen people.

Flood death toll rises in Jakarta, tens of thousands evacuated

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people were evacuated in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Thursday after flash floods and landslides in the area killed up to 21 people, with more heavy rain forecast, authorities said.

The flooding, among the deadliest in years, caused chaos in parts of Southeast Asia’s biggest city with train lines blocked and power outages in some areas. Swathes of Jakarta and nearby towns were inundated after heavy rain fell on Dec. 31 and into the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Hundreds arrested in Hong Kong in New Year's Day protests: police

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police arrested about 400 people in New Year’s Day protests after what started as a peaceful pro-democracy march of tens of thousands spiraled into chaotic scenes with police firing tear gas to disperse the crowds.

The arrests take the total to about 7,000 since protests in the city escalated in June over a now-withdrawn bill that would have allowed extradition to mainland China, and will highlight the apparent absence of any progress towards ending the unrest.

Plantation shares up on Bursa as India cuts import duties on CPO, RPO

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Most of the plantation-linked counters on Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session higher today as investors hailed India’s move of cutting import duties on crude palm oil and refined palm oil from Southeast Asian countries, effective Jan 1, 2020.

At 12.30 pm, all the three plantation-linked counters on the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI), namely KLK, Sime Darby Plantation and IOI Corporation, ended in the black due to the good news for the industry.

Malaysia’s Education Minister resigns

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia’s Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik today announced that he is stepping down from his post effective Friday, January 3.

In a 4.30pm press conference at his office, that was broadcast live by Bernama TV, he said he had met up with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier today.

During the press conference, Dr Maszlee spoke in details some of the achievements made in the last one year by the ministry during his tenure.

Tanker and crew detained by Iranian national guards not Malaysian

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The tanker detained by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRB) in Hormuz Strait recently is not Malaysian owned and the 16 crew are not Malaysians, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah clarified today.

He was commenting on a recent news report that the IRB had seized a ship suspected of fuel-smuggling and arrested 16 Malaysian crew members.

Japanese prosecutors raid Nissan ex-chair Ghosn's Tokyo home

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese prosecutors on Thursday raided the Tokyo home of former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn after he skipped bail and fled to Lebanon before his trial on financial misconduct charges.

Tokyo prosecutors and police did not immediately comment. Japanese media showed investigators entering the home, which was Ghosn’s third residence in Tokyo since he was first arrested a year ago. Authorities have now searched each one.

Government offices in Japan are closed this week for the New Year’s holidays.

Asian markets mostly higher on optimism about US-China deal

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares were mostly higher on optimism about a U.S.-China trade deal as regional markets opened the new year’s first day of trading Thursday.

Australia’s S&P ASX 200 gained 0.3% in morning trading to 6,704.00, while South Korea’s Kospi lost 0.8% to 2,179.25. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 1.2% to 28,516.99, while the Shanghai Composite gained 1.5% to 3,095.00. Tokyo was still closed for the New Year’s holiday.

Copter crash kills Taiwan’s top military officer, 7 others

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan’s top military official was killed in an air force helicopter crash Thursday morning that killed seven other people, the defense ministry said.

Five people survived the crash in mountains outside the capital.

As chief of the general staff, Gen. Shen Yi-ming was responsible for overseeing the island’s defense against China, which threatens to use military force to annex what it considers it own territory.

The helicopter was flying from Taipei to the northeastern city of Ilan for a new year’s activity when it crashed.
