Iran’s FM starts China visit

BEIJING, Aug 26 (NNN-IRNA) — Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in the Chinese capital early on Monday for talks about the latest regional and international developments and issues of mutual interests.

Zarif’s visit to China is being paid upon an official invitation by his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

China says U.S. can do more to reduce fentanyl demand

BEIJING (Reuters) - The U.S. government can do more to reduce demand for fentanyl and should stop shifting the blame onto others, China said on Monday, in another riposte to Trump administration criticism that China is not helping resolve the drug problem.

U.S. officials say China is the main source of illicit fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances that are trafficked into the United States, much of it through international mail. China denies that most of the illicit fentanyl entering the United States originates in China.

15 policemen injured as Hong Kong protests turn violent

HONG KONG, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Fifteen police officers were injured after they were attacked on Sunday by violent protesters in Tsuen Wan, in the western New Territories of Hong Kong. Radical protesters hurled petrol bombs at the officers and brutally assaulted them.

The police officers were sent to the hospital for treatment. Police severely condemn the protesters who purposefully harmed police officers, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said in a statement on Monday.

China lets currency sink

BEIJING (AP) — China allowed its yuan to sink Monday and U.S. President Donald Trump said the two sides will talk “very seriously” about a war over trade and technology following tit-for-tat tariff hikes and Trump’s threat to order American companies to stop doing business with China.

The escalations prompted warnings that the chances of a settlement of the fight that threatens to tip the global economy into recession were disappearing.

But at a conference in France, Trump said serious negotiations would begin.

Asian shares tumble as US-China trade war renews uncertainty

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares tumbled Monday after the latest escalation in the U.S.-China trade war renewed uncertainties about global economies, as well as questions over what President Donald Trump might say next.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 started plummeting as soon as trading began and stood at 20,234.87 in the morning session, down 2.3%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 1.5% to 6,427.20. South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.7% to 1,916.14. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 3.3% to 25,309.37, while the Shanghai Composite was down 1.2% at 2,862.87.

S.Korea's military launches maritime defense drills in East Sea after ending GSOMIA with Japan

SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's military on Sunday launched two-day maritime defense drills in the East Sea, just three days after ending the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) with Japan.

The South Korean navy said in a statement that it would stage the "territory defense exercises" in the East Sea from Sunday to Monday.

Participating in the maritime drills in the eastern waters would be battleships from the navy and the coast guard, warplanes from the navy and the air force, and service members from the army and the marine corps.

S. Korean president to pay state visit to Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in will pay a state visit to Myanmar soon at the invitation of his Myanmar counterpart U Win Myint, the Myanmar government said in a media announcement on Sunday.

Myanmar and S. Korea have been making efforts to enhance their economic and trade cooperation and have coordinated to establish an industrial zone for Korean companies investing in Myanmar.

HKSAR gov't strongly condemns vandalistic, violent acts of radical protesters

HONG KONG, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has strongly condemned the vandalistic and violent acts of radical protesters in Kowloon district on Saturday.

The police will strictly follow up on all the illegal acts, a spokesperson of the HKSAR government said in a statement issued late Saturday, appealing to the protesters to stop the violence so that order can be restored in society as soon as possible.

N. Korea tests new ‘super-large’ multiple rocket launcher

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Sunday leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test-firing of a “newly developed super-large multiple rocket launcher,” another demonstration of its expanding weapons arsenal apparently aimed at increasing its leverage ahead of a possible resumption of nuclear talks with the U.S.

The North’s Korean Central News Agency said Saturday’s weapons test was successful and cited Kim as saying the rocket launcher is “indeed a great weapon.”
