Malaysia’s economy to be driven by ongoing mega projects in 2H19

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s economic growth for the second half of this year is set to be healthy and driven by the ongoing mega projects, despite the current global economic uncertainties, says Maybank Kim Eng Group economist, Lee Ju Ye.

She said among the mega projects are the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) which has been revived and the Klang Valley MRT 2 as well the LRT 3 project that would become the factors underpinning growth over the long term. 

Entrepreneur Development Ministry studying takeover of Malaysia’s halal industry

KOTA BHARU, Aug 18 (NNN-Bernama) — The Entrepreneur Development Ministry is studying placing the development of Malaysia’s halal industry under its ambit and in line with its role which is more focused on it.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof said, however, the business of certification will remain with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and see the continued involvement of the ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to award the Malaysian standard. 

Over 470,000 people in Hong Kong say "no" to violence

HONG KONG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- "Anti-violence!", "Save Hong Kong!" Over 470,000 people gathered on Saturday in a rally held at Tamar Park, Admiralty of Hong Kong, to voice out their demand for peace and stability in Hong Kong.

At around 4 p.m. local time, the metro station near Tamar Park was swarming with people. An hour later, the rally started as the Chinese national anthem was ringing out.

Tens of thousands flood Hong Kong park for new rally

HONG KONG (AP) — Heavy rain fell on tens of thousands of umbrella-ready protesters Sunday as they started marching from a packed park in central Hong Kong, where mass pro-democracy demonstrations have become a regular weekend activity.

While recent rallies have been marked by violent clashes with police, organizers said they hoped Sunday’s assembly would be peaceful.

“We hope that there will not be any chaotic situations today,” said organizer Bonnie Leung. “We hope we can show the world that Hong Kong people can be totally peaceful.”

China condemns US lawmakers’ support for Hong Kong protests

HONG KONG (AP) — A spokesman for China’s ceremonial legislature condemned statements from U.S. lawmakers supportive of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, as more protests were planned Sunday following a day of dueling rallies that highlighted the political divide in the Chinese territory.

China's commercial carrier rocket Smart Dragon-1 makes maiden flight

JIUQUAN, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's new carrier rocket Smart Dragon-1 (SD-1), designed for commercial use, made its maiden flight on Saturday, sending three satellites into planned orbit.

The rocket, developed by the China Rocket Co. Ltd. affiliated to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT), blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 12:11 p.m. (Beijing Time).

The three satellites, respectively developed by three Beijing-based companies, will be used for remote sensing services, communication and Internet of Things.

China lodges solemn representations against U.S. arms sales to Taiwan

China responds to U.S. remarks on Hong Kong: FM spokesperson

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks concerning the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).

According to reports, the U.S. President tweeted Thursday that a meeting between Chinese leader and Hong Kong's protesters could lead to a happy ending of the protests.

When asked for comments on this, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said that China has noticed Trump used to say that "the riots" in Hong Kong had lasted for a long time.
