MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) — Rich countries said they will spend about $25 billion by 2025 to boost Africa’s efforts to adapt to climate change as the continent continues to struggle with drought, cyclones and extreme heat, according to officials at a summit in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Monday.

NAIROBI, Sep. 1 (Xinhua) -- African countries should harness traditional medicine that has proved effective in the management and cure of ailments afflicting the continent's population, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Wednesday.

WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti underscored the critical role of herbal medicine in lessening the burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases in the continent.

NAIROBI, Aug 31 (NNN-KBC) — Kenya is at an advanced stage of sealing export deals with Malaysia and Mauritius for shipment of day-old chicks.

The Director of Veterinary Services Obadiah Njagi says talks with the two nations are part of Kenya’s plan to increase live animal exports.

Kenya’s annual chicken exports are valued at Ksh27.3 million making it the 94th largest exporter in the world. Rwanda, South Sudan, Somalia, Uganda and Ethiopia are the main markets for Kenyan chicken products.

NAIROBI, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan plant health regulatory agency said Monday it has kicked off talks with its counterparts in Malaysia to secure a broader international market footprint.

Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service said it has been working hard to secure export market access for local avocado growers beyond the traditional European markets.

NAIROBI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), a green lobby based in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, on Sunday launched the climate justice torch (CJT) with the aim of galvanizing local actions geared toward hastening the transition to a low carbon future.

Mithika Mwenda, the executive director of PACJA, said the CJT campaign seeks to rally grassroots communities toward activities that promote green transition in a continent already reeling from a host of climatic shocks.

NAIROBI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has assured the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of a peaceful settlement of electoral disputes in the country.

The 77-year-old Odinga who has challenged in court the presidential election results announced by the electoral body on Aug. 15 where his main competitor in the race, the sitting Deputy President William Ruto, was declared the winner, told Guterres in a telephone conversation Friday night that he will respect the ruling of the Supreme Court.

NAIROBI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya Airways (KQ), the country's national carrier, said Wednesday it reduced its loss to 9.86 billion shillings (about 82.22 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months ending June from 95.75 million dollars recorded in a similar period in 2021.

Allan Kilavuka, the chief executive officer of Kenya Airways, attributed the improved performance to significant growth in passenger and cargo revenue in the period under review.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An airstrike by Ethiopia’s air force hit a kindergarten in the country’s embattled Tigray region, causing deaths and injuries on Friday, according to local broadcasters. It was the latest escalation of a conflict that has created a humanitarian crisis for millions of people.

Tigray Television quoted witnesses saying the afternoon attack hit a kindergarten called Red Kids Paradise in the Tigrayan capital of Mekele. It aired graphic images of children and adults with dismembered bodies in the aftermath of the attack.

 NAIROBI, Aug 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A group of Kenyans have filed cases against the UK government at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for alleged colonial abuses.

These include alleged theft of land, which is still being used by tea firms.

The clans say the UK’s alleged lack of engagement to seek redress has violated the European Convention on Human Rights.

The UK Foreign Office said it was “inappropriate to comment on legal proceedings”.

NAIROBI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- More than 2.8 million children across the Horn of Africa and the Sahel are already suffering from severe acute malnutrition and could die in disturbing numbers unless urgent support is provided, the United Nations children's agency, UNICEF, warned on Tuesday.

The UN agency said the number means children are up to 11 times more at risk of dying from water-borne diseases than well-nourished children as severe malnutrition and the risk of water-borne disease collide.
