Canada's Trudeau in isolation after COVID exposure; says test negative

OTTAWA, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday he had gone into isolation for five days after being exposed to someone with COVID-19, adding a rapid test result had come back negative.

"I feel fine and will be working from home. Stay safe, everyone – and please get vaccinated," Trudeau tweeted.

The news means Trudeau, 50, will miss the reopening of Parliament next Monday. Trudeau, prime minister since November 2015, was reelected for a second time last September.

U.S. authorities have charged a U.S. man with human trafficking after the four - a man, woman, baby and teenager - were found dead in the province of Manitoba, a few yards north of the frontier with Minnesota. 

Florida man charged after 4 found dead at Canada-US border

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — A Florida man has been charged with human smuggling after the bodies of four people, including a baby and a teen, were found in Canada near the U.S. border in what authorities believe was a failed crossing attempt during a freezing blizzard.

Steve Shand, 47, was charged Thursday with human smuggling after seven Indian nationals were found in the U.S. and the discovery of the bodies, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota.

Canada, echoing U.S., says it fears armed conflict could erupt in Ukraine

OTTAWA, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Canada fears armed conflict could break out in Ukraine and is working with allies to make clear to Russia that any more aggression towards Kiev is unacceptable, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier that Russia could launch a new attack on Ukraine at "very short notice". Moscow, which has stationed military equipment and tens of thousands of troops near the border, denies it is planning an invasion and blames the West for rising tensions.

Canadian foreign minister to visit Ukraine, vows to deter Russian aggression

Canada court awards compensation for families of airliner downed by Iran

MONTREAL, Jan 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Canadian court has awarded more than CAN$100 million in compensation to the families of six people who died aboard a Ukrainian passenger jet shot down over Tehran almost two years ago, local media said.

Iran shot down Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 shortly after take-off from its capital Tehran on Jan 8, 2020, killing all 176 people aboard, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Three days later, the Iranian armed forces admitted having shot down the Kiev-bound plane “by mistake”.

Canada records 41,210 new COVID-19 cases

OTTAWA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Canada is going through its worst spike in COVID-19 cases yet, driven by the Omicron variant, with 41,210 new cases reported on Friday evening, an all-time high for daily cases since the pandemic hit the country in February 2020.

The latest cases raised the country's cumulative caseload to 2,183,527, With 30,319 deaths, according to CTV news.

Over the past weeks, the country's daily case counts have been rising due to the fast spread of the Omicron variant.
