Asia looks to China-focused trade bloc for virus recovery

BANGKOK (AP) — Members of a China-centered Asian trade bloc that takes effect Jan. 1 are hoping the initiative, encompassing about a third of world trade and business activity, will help power their recoveries from the pandemic.

The 15-member Regional and Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, includes China, Japan, South Korea and many other Asian countries. It does not include the U.S. or India.

China: Wang Yi to visit Maldives, Sri Lanka upon invitation

BEIJING, Dec 30 (APP): Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi will visit Maldives and Sri Lanka upon invitation, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Zhao Lijian announced on Thursday.


“Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to the two South Asian countries come at the 50th anniversary of China-Maldives diplomatic relations, 65th anniversary of China-Sri Lanka diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of the Rubber-Rice Pact,” he said while sharing more information during his regular briefing held here.

Russia: Beijing, Moscow can resist pressure from hegemonic powers, says China’s top diplomat

US Donates Over US$100,000 To M’sian Red Crescent Society For Flood Relief Efforts

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 (NNN-Bernama) — The United States (US) has pledged some RM420,000 (US$100,534) for flood relief efforts to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said the aid made through the United States Agency for International Development will support the provision of health services to flood affected households in Malaysia, including medical treatment, disease prevention, and mental health services.

Indonesian Navy Tows Boat With Rohingya Refugees To Nearest Port

JAKARTA, Dec 30 (NNN-Bernama) — After deciding to allow over 100 Rohingya refugees to safely disembark, Indonesia on Thursday dispatched one of its naval ships to tow the overcrowded stricken boat to Kruengkeukuh Port in Lhokseumawe City, near Aceh province.

On Wednesday, after initially wanting to turn away the boat, Indonesia allowed the refugees to come ashore on humanitarian grounds.

The dilapidated boat was adrift for days after it broke down and started leaking about 85 kilometres off the coast of Bireuen.

Malaysian Police Seize Drugs Worth Over US$200 Million From Jan To Nov 2021

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 (NNN-Bernama) — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has seized various types of drugs weighing 27 metric tonnes, worth almost RM1 billion (US$239.4 million), during the period from January to Nov 30 this year.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Razarudin Husain said among the drugs seized were 7.9 tonnes of methamphetamine and 5.6 tonnes of ephedrine.
