Algeria resigns Inter-Parliamentary Union presidency in protest at Israel's membership

02 May 2023; MEMO: The Algerian Parliament announced on Sunday the resignation of its deputy speaker, Mondher Boudin MP, from the presidency of the Advisory Group for Combating Terrorism in the Inter-Parliamentary Union in protest at Israel's membership of the group. The move was said to be in support of the Palestinian cause.

Algeria pardons nearly 9,000 prisoners in Eid amnesty

20 Apr 2023; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune pardoned 8,985 prisoners yesterday in the run-up to Eid El-Fitr, granting an amnesty to those who are serving or have suspended sentences of 12 months or less.

The decree also includes prisoners sentenced to 18 months in jail but who are 65 years or more, juveniles, pregnant women and mothers of children aged three years old or under.

Syria’s FM to Algeria, Tunisia to revive diplomatic ties

ALGIERS (AP) — Syria’s chief diplomat has started a visit to Algeria and Tunisia as part of efforts to revive diplomatic relationships in the Arab world, more than a decade after his country was globally isolated amid President Bashar Assad’s brutal crackdown on mass protests against his rule.

Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad was welcomed on Saturday in the lounge of Algiers airport by his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf.

Algeria interior minister: 'We are facing a drug war'

15 Apr 2023; MEMO: Algerian Interior Minister Brahim Merad addressed the "drug war" his country is facing by announcing: "Algeria is being targeted through drugs, as it is facing a war from its western neighbour, which requires us to confront it by all means."

Merad praised the tremendous work done by the People's National Army and the various security agencies in combating this phenomenon and protecting the borders from all forms of crime.

Algeria army commander visits Brazil to strengthen ties

11 Apr 2023; MEMO: The Algerian army's Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha, yesterday started an official visit to Brazil, the Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.

Serving as representative of the president, the supreme chief of the Armed Forces, and the minister of national defence, Chengriha will take part in the 13th Defence and Security Exhibition (LAAD-2023), organised in Rio De Janeiro from 11-14 April, the ministry added in its statement.

Algerian president says Morocco ties reach ‘point of no return

ALGIERS, March 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Algeria’s relations with Morocco have reached “the point of no return”, according to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the latest evidence of the continued poor relationship between the two countries, which broke off relations in 2021.

Speaking in an interview, Tebboune said that while he regretted the deteriorating relations between Algeria and its neighbour, he blamed Morocco for the current state of affairs.

This was reflected by the close visit of two senior British officials to the country, and their meeting with the Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army, through which he sent several messages related to "Algeria's neutrality in the ongoing international conflicts and its jealousy over its sovereignty".

Algeria detains 4 for 'smuggling' activist to France

21 Feb 2023; MEMO: An Algerian court sentenced four people to pretrial detention and placed another under judicial monitoring over the smuggling of Algerian-French activist Amira Bouraoui out of the country to France via Tunisia.

The Constantine Court Prosecution said in a statement that the investigating judge ordered the temporary detention of four persons and placed a fifth person under judicial monitoring on Sunday.
