Algeria names football stadium after Nelson Mandela

21 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algerian Sports Minister Abdel Razzak Sabkak announced on Tuesday that the new football stadium currently under construction near Algiers will be named after the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, Anadolu news agency has reported. Sabkak made the announcement at a press conference.

Algeria to relaunch pipeline plan to transport gas, hydrogen to Italy, Germany

21 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria's Ministry of Energy and Mines is mulling the construction of a gas pipeline linking the country with Italy, local media reported, citing Mohamed Arkab.

In a speech he gave at the Algerian-German Energy Day yesterday, Arkab said that Algeria is conducting a study to develop extensive infrastructure for electricity transmission and a network to link Algeria with the northern part of the Mediterranean.

Algeria's non-oil exports exceed $6bn at end of November

20 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria's non-oil exports exceeded $6 billion in the period between the beginning of the year and the end of November, the highest achievement in the country's history since its independence from France in 1962, Trade Minister Kamal Rizik said yesterday.

Rizik's remarks came on the sidelines of the launch of the Algerian Production Exhibition, which will take place in the capital until 24 December, Anadolu Agency reported.

Algeria: Foreign religious freedom reports 'inaccurate'

19 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algerian Minister of Religious Affairs Youcef Belmehdi yesterday criticised foreign reports on restrictions on religious freedoms in the country, saying they are based on "inaccurate information".

This comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on 2 December that Washington had placed Algeria on the "Religious Freedom Infringement Watchlist".

Algeria calls for reform of UN Security Council

08 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, called on Wednesday for reform of the UN Security Council so that Africa can have two permanent seats. Lamamra made his call during the ninth conference of senior African officials about peace and security across the continent held in the Algerian city of Wahran.

Algeria signs executive plan for Belt and Road initiative with China

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria and China signed an executive plan on Monday for the joint development of the Belt and Road initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers has announced. A second agreement was signed regarding cooperation in "important areas" between the two countries extending until 2024.

The Chinese Belt and Road initiative is a project to build roads, ports, railways and industrial zones in 65 countries representing 60 per cent of the global population and providing about a third of the world's total output.

Algeria, Jordan sign 5 agreements to strengthen ties

ALGIERS, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Algeria and Jordan signed five agreements on Sunday in a ceremony co-chaired by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and visiting King Abdullah II of Jordan in the capital Algiers.

The agreements included a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral political consultations, an agreement on the mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports and a MoU between the two countries' diplomatic institutes.

Algeria: Court issues prison sentences, severe penalties for ministers, government officials

03 Dec 2022; MEMO: The Sidi M'Hamed Court in Algiers has issued a ten-year enforceable imprisonment and a fine of one million Algerian dinars (about $7,000) against Arezki Berraki, the former minister of water resources. The sentence is the first conviction of an official who served in the government of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, although it relates to a period preceding his government work.

Cuba and Algeria promote scientific exchanges

ALGIERS, Nov 19 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Cuba and Algeria promoted the beginning of scientific exchanges between the Algiers-based Pasteur Institute (IPA) and other similar institutions in Cuba, including the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute.    

Cuban Public Health Minister Jose Angel Portal noted that, as part of the events held in Algeria on Wednesday, the delegation he is heading visited the IPA facilities and appreciated the development achieved by that renowned scientific institution.

Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline serves 13 Africa countries

12 Nov 2022; MEMO: A Moroccan official has confirmed that the Nigeria-Morocco natural gas pipeline (NMGP) serves 13 African countries, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.

The 6,000 kilometres of the pipeline will cross the African countries along the Atlantic coast and supply the landlocked states of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.
