Two Rohingya refugees test positive in refugee camp

DHAKA, May 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Two Rohingya refugees have tested positive for coronavirus in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, officials say.

These are the first confirmed cases among refugees in Cox’s Bazaar, where around one million Rohingyas are encamped, a government doctor said.

Officials said that those infected were now being treated in isolation.

About 1,900 other refugees are now being isolated for tests.

The Rohingyas in the crowded camps of Cox’s Bazar have been living under lockdown since March 14.

Bangladesh: 719 foreigners leave by special flights, 259 Bangladeshis returns

DHAKA, April 22 (NNN-BSS) — Five special flights including one from Bangladesh Air Force bring back 259 Bangladeshis and taking away 719 foreigners from here amid ongoing flight suspension due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the Bangladeshi nationals, 169 arrived here from India, 70 from the Maldives and 20 from Turkey while 301 US citizens, 264 Britons and 154 Turkish nationals left here for their respective countries by separate chartered flights.

Bangladesh: Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Rise To 482

DHAKA, Apr 12 (NNN-XINHUA) – Fifty-eight more COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, as of 8:00 a.m. local time, bringing the total to 482, said Bangladesh Health Minister, Zahid Maleque, in an online press conference.

He said, officials also confirmed three more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country since last month to 30.

During the last 24 hours, the minister said, samples from 954 persons were tested across Bangladesh.

Overseas Chinese Association In Bangladesh Donates Medical Supplies To Bangladesh Police

DHAKA, Mar 30 (NNN-BSS) – Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh (OCAIB), made donations of medical supplies to support Bangladesh Police, in fighting COVID-19 in the country.

The supplies, including medical masks, medical protective clothing and testing reagents, were handed over to Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, Mohammad Javed Patwary, by President of the Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh, Zhuang Lifeng, during a ceremony in Dhaka.

The wretched conditions in the camps, where most of the stateless Muslims arrived in 2017 to escape a Myanmar military clampdown across the nearby border, are fertile ground for any disease.

Bangladeshi Ex-PM Khaleda Zia Released From Jail For Six Months

DHAKA, Mar 26 (NNN-BSS) – Bangladeshi ex-Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has been released from jail for six months, on humanitarian grounds, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Zia, also chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), at around 4:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday, came out of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka, where she is being treated.

The Bangladeshi government announced its decision to release Zia, suspending her sentence for six months.

Bangladesh PM postpones visit to Japan over coronavirus outbreak

Dhaka, Mar 10 (PTI) Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has postponed her two-day official visit to Japan over the global outbreak of the deadly novel coronavirus, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Tuesday.

"The prime minister was scheduled to travel to Japan on March 30. But the visit has been postponed as the novel coronavirus cases have spread there too," Momen was quoted as saying by Bdnews24.com.

Bangladeshis Protest Against Violence In Indian Capital

DHAKA, Feb 29 (NNN-BSS) – Thousands of people in Bangladesh staged demonstrations, protesting against violent clashes in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

After Friday’s weekly Jummah prayers, the protesters marched on the streets from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city, chanting anti-Indian slogans.

Hundreds of anti-riot policemen were deployed to thwart any untoward incident, following the demonstration, joined by members of local political Islamic groups and organisations.
