Bangladesh: Biman to refund Saudi-bound Umrah passengers

DHAKA, Feb 28 (NNN-BSS) – Biman Bangladesh Airlines will refund to its passengers who, bought tickets for traveling to Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah or tourism purposes, as the Saudi government has imposed a temporary ban on Umrah pilgrims and tourists to stop the spread of Covid-19 coronavirus in the Kingdom.

If the passengers want to travel to Saudi Arabia after withdrawal of the ban, they would be able to get seats, subject to availability, said a Biman press release.

Indian Border Guards Kill 11 Bangladeshis Since Dec

DHAKA, Feb 6 (NNN-BSS) – Indian Border Security Force (BSF) killed at least 11 Bangladeshi nationals since Dec 25 last year, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director (planning), Lieutenant Colonel Syed Ashiqur Rahman.

He said, they continued efforts to stop the killing of Bangladeshi citizens by BSF.

BGB came up with the border death information days after Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, AK Abdul Momen, for the second time since last month, expressed Dhaka’s concern over the killings of Bangladeshis along the border with India by BSF.

Netherlands: International court gathering evidence in Rohingya case

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Investigators from the International Criminal Court have begun collecting evidence for a case involving alleged crimes against humanity by Myanmar against Rohingya Muslims causing them to flee to neighboring Bangladesh, a court official said Tuesday.

Phakiso Mochochoko, director of the Jurisdiction, Complementary and Cooperation Division of the ICC Office of the Prosecutor, said a team of investigators is visiting Rohingya refugee camps to collect evidence. He said justice will be delivered whether Myanmar cooperates or not.

Bangladeshi opposition rejects major city polls, calls strike for Sunday

DHAKA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's largest opposition party has called a dawn-to-dusk strike for Sunday in capital Dhaka rejecting the results of two major city polls.

At a press conference in Dhaka hours after the city corporation polls, ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the strike Saturday night.

India: Bangladesh allows education for Rohingya refugee children

Dhaka, Jan 28 (AFP/PTI) Rohingya children living in Bangladesh refugee camps will be allowed to receive a formal education after a change of heart by Dhaka in a move welcomed by right activists.

Nearly one million Rohingya, including more than half a million children, live in the squalid and crowded camps near the southeastern border with Myanmar, where many had fled from in 2017 after a brutal military crackdown.

Bangladesh records lowest temperature this year

DHAKA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh recorded the lowest temperature of this year on Sunday as mercury dipped to a chilling 4.5 degrees Celsius in the country's northernmost Tentulia region.

The severe cold brought the normal life and businesses to almost standstill in parts of Bangladesh, specially in the northern region facing the Himalayan mountains.

Senior Meteorologist Ruhul Quddus told the media that mercury plunged to its lowest 4.5 degrees Celsius in Tentulia under Panchagarh district, 468 km away of the capital Dhaka.

Fifty dead as cold wave sweeps through Bangladesh

DHAKA (Reuters) - At least 50 people have died in Bangladesh as cold weather continues to sweep across the country, officials said.

The country’s lowest temperature this year was recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius (40.1° Fahrenheit) early on Sunday in Tetulia, a border town in Bangladesh’s north, the weather office said.

At least 17 people died of acute respiratory infection and 33 from diarrhoea caused by rotavirus and other diseases across Bangladesh from Nov. 1 to Dec. 28, said Ayesha Akhter, a senior official of the government’s health directorate.

Riyadh will always stay beside Dhaka on Rohingya issue, Saudi CGS tells PM

Bangladesh-Turkey hold home minister level meeting in Ankara

DHAKA, Nov 29 (NNN-BSS) — A home-minister level meeting between Bangladesh and Turkey was held at the conference room of the Turkish Home Ministry in Ankara.

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal led a 20-member Bangladeshi delegation while Turkish Home Minister Suleyman Soylu led his country’s side, said an official press release here.

Both the ministers discussed the issues of Rohingya crisis, counter-terrorism, irregular migration, security and enhancing efficiency of law enforcement agencies.
