Israel summons South Africa envoy after Israeli diplomat expelled from AU meeting

20 Feb 2023; MEMO: The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it would summon the South African ambassador for a reprimand after the ministry's Deputy Director of African Affairs, Sharon Bar Li, was expelled on Saturday from the African Union summit in Addis Ababa at the request of South Africa and Algeria.

Ethiopia: Kenya becomes first African State to sign AACC Statute

ADDIS ABABA, Feb 19 (NNN-KBC) — Kenya has become the first African State to sign the African Audiovisual and Cinema Commission (AACC) statute.

The signing ceremony which took place on the margins of the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, comes hot on the heels of Kenya signing a host country agreement between Kenya and African Union (AU).

The agreement paves the way for the operationalization of a temporary secretariat of the African Audiovisual and Cinema Commission (AACC) to be based in Nairobi.

Ethiopia: Comorian president takes over rotating chair of AU

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Comorian President Azali Assoumani on Saturday took over the rotating African Union (AU) chairmanship at the opening of the 36th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly.

Assoumani replaces the outgoing chairman, also Senegalese President Macky Sall. In his acceptance speech, the Comorian president emphasized the need to exert concerted efforts toward the betterment of Africa and its people.

Ethiopia: Top Israeli diplomat ejected from African Union summit as row escalates

ADDIS ABABA, Feb 18 (Reuters) - A senior Israeli diplomat was on Saturday removed from the African Union's annual summit in Ethiopia, as a dispute over Israel's accreditation to the bloc escalated.

Images posted online showed AU security personnel confronting the diplomat during the opening ceremony of the summit, before she left the auditorium.

UN says 22.6 mln Ethiopians food insecure due to drought, conflict, rising food prices

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- About 22.6 million people in Ethiopia are food insecure due to a combination of drought, conflict and increase in food prices, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has warned.

The UNOCHA said in its latest situation update issued late Thursday that an estimated 11.8 million people are food insecure in Ethiopia's drought-affected areas of Afar, Somali, Oromia, and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) regions, and Dire Dawa city administration.

Close to 1 mln people at high risk of cholera outbreak in Ethiopia: UNOCHA

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Close to 1 million people are at high risk of cholera disease in the 10 affected districts of southeastern Ethiopia, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

The UNOCHA, in its latest situation update issued late Monday, warned over the ongoing cholera outbreak as the death toll climbed to 28 in the country.

Ethiopia: UN agency warns humanitarian crisis in Horn of Africa expanding, deepening

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- After five consecutive below-average rains, the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa is expanding and deepening, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has warned.

Combined with insecurity and macroeconomic volatility, the impact of the drought on food and nutrition security has been devastating, the WFP said in its regional drought response plan for the Horn of Africa issued late Monday.

Across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, an estimated 22 million people are now acutely food insecure because of the drought, the WFP said.

Ethiopia: Africa should not be arena for international competition, says Chinese foreign minister

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Africa should not be an arena for competition between world powers, China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Wednesday, opening a new headquarters for a pan-African health body at the start of five-country Africa tour.

Qin visited facilities of the African Union in Addis Ababa, including the new headquarters of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. China financed the complex's construction, as it previously did for the headquarters of the AU itself, also based in the Ethiopian capital.

Ethiopian gov't delegation heads to rebel-held Tigray capital

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of Ethiopian federal government officials on Monday headed to Mekele, the rebel-held capital of the country's Tigray region.

The trip, which came after a permanent cessation of hostilities agreement signed on Nov. 2 between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which now controls the northernmost region, is the first by a federal government delegation since conflict erupted back in November 2020.
