Ethiopia's inquiry into 2019 deadly Boeing 737-8 Max crash blames safety feature failure

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-8 Max airplane which killed 157 people was caused by a faulty safety feature, said Ethiopian authorities in its final report on Friday.

On March 10, 2019, the aircraft flying from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed a few minutes after takeoff, eventually killing all the passengers and crew on board.

A final report on the accident concluded nothing was wrong before takeoff, and the crash was due to a safety feature failure, said Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopian minister of transport and logistics.

Ethiopia arrests senior official in anti-corruption crackdown

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia's newly formed National Anti-Corruption Committee (NACC) disclosed Friday that the director general of the Ethiopian Financial Security Services (EFSS), Tewodros Bekele, has been arrested as part of an anti-corruption crackdown.

The EFSS is a government body that coordinates various institutions involved in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

First UNHCR aid convoy since August arrives in Ethiopia's conflict-hit Tigray

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced its first aid convoy since August has arrived in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region's capital.

"First UNHCR convoy since August arrived in Mekelle, Tigray, carrying life-saving humanitarian aid including medicines and shelter kits to treat the sick and repair destroyed homes," the UN refugee agency said on Monday.

"More is on the way as UNHCR scales up delivery of protection and solutions in Northern Ethiopia," the UNHCR said in a statement via social media.

AU calls for pragmatic interventions to inject dynamism to Africa's industrialization

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Albert Muchanga, African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals has called for pragmatic interventions to inject dynamism into Africa's inclusive and sustainable industrialization.

The AU commissioner made the remarks at the joint meeting of African ministers in charge of industry and economic diversification that was held in Niger's capital, Niamey on Monday, an AU statement indicated.

Ethiopia-Tigray peace talks begin in South Africa

26 October 2022; MEMO: Peace talks between Ethiopia's government and Tigray rebels to end a devastating conflict in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region began Tuesday in South Africa, according to a presidency spokesman, Anadolu News Agency reports.

South Africa hopes the talks will proceed constructively and result in a successful outcome that leads to lasting peace for all Ethiopians, Vincent Magwenya told reporters.

AU welcomes initiation of Ethiopian government, rebels peace talks

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has welcomed the initiation of the AU-lead peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

The AUPSC said in a press statement released Friday that it hopes peace talks scheduled for Monday in South Africa will have a fruitful outcome.

The Ethiopian government and TPLF have both confirmed their attendance for next week's peace talks.

97 Ethiopians intercepted in suspected case of human trafficking

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region disclosed they have intercepted 97 Ethiopians in a suspected case of human trafficking.

In a press statement released Friday, the Bati district communication office of the Amhara region said 52 males and 45 females were recently intercepted by security forces while allegedly being smuggled to an undisclosed location.
