Indian Polls: EC must check vehicles of PM, union ministers: Mamata

Hasnabad/Dum Dum (WB), May 11 (PTI) Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee Saturday alleged that the BJP is using money to buy votes and demanded that all vehicles, including helicopters used by the prime minister and union ministers, be checked by the Election Commission.

Banerjee asked the EC to check even cars and the helicopter used by her, if need be.

She cautioned voters about outsiders and alleged that Union ministers travelling with 'Z' and 'Y' category security carry funds in their vehicles.

India: TMC leader attacks PM on Davos photo with Nirav Modi

Baduria (WB), May 11 (PTI) TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee Saturday said if party leader Madan Mitra can be arrested for "just a picture" with Saradha group founder Sudipta Sen, the prime minister should also be held for "posing" with fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi.

Mitra, a former transport minister of West Bengal, was released from custody on bail in September 2016, after spending over 21 months in jail in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chitfund scam.

India: FIR against Bihar BJP MP after cash recovery from hotel room

Patna, May 11 (PTI) An FIR was lodged against sitting BJP MP from Sheohar, Rama Devi, following recovery of Rs 4 lakh in cash from a hotel in East Champaran district, where she had been putting up, police said here on Saturday.

The complaint was lodged at Chhatauni police station area in the district, where Rs 4.06 lakh was recovered late Friday night from the hotel where Rama Devi, part of whose constituency falls in East Champaran, has been staying.

Time magazine calls Modi ‘India’s divider-in-chief’

NEW YORK, May 11 (APP): The mass-circulation Time magazine has featured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as India’s “divider-in-chief” on the cover of its international editions, as the country enters the final phase of the general election.

But Time’s cover of its U.S. edition is devoted to US Senator Elizabeth Warren, one of the women candidates for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination.

Indian Polls: 6th Phase polling starts, EVM glitches reported

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) Complaints about malfunctioning EVMs poured in from several places of the national capital on Sunday where voting is underway.

Adarsh Gupta, a resident of Matia Mahal area, claimed that at polling booth number 84, 85 and 86, electronic voting machines were initially not working in the morning.

Aam Aadmi Party's Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti alleged that EVMs at booths number -- 116,117 and 122 -- were not functioning.

Indian Polls: Sidhu in fresh EC trouble for his remarks against PM Modi

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) The Election Commission has issued a fresh show cause notice to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu for prima facie violating the Model Code of Conduct by allegedly making disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He was given a day to reply to the notice that was issued Friday by the commission.

The poll panel had received a complaint from the BJP that Sidhu, during a rally in Madhya Pradesh on April 29, had made disparaging comments about Modi.

India: Modi hates my family, I will repay him with love: Rahul

Shimla, May 10 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Friday said he will reply with love to prime minister Narendra Modi's hatred towards him and his family.

Addressing a rally in Himachal Pradesh's Una, he also flayed Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party government over demonetisation and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Modi may spread hatred against me and late PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, but I will repay with love, he said.

Indian Polls: Campaigning ends for sixth phase of LS polls

Kolkata, May 10 (PTI) The high-pitched campaigning by different political parties for eight Lok Sabha constituencies going to the polls in the sixth phase on May 12 came to an end Friday evening.

Election in this phase will cover Jangal Mahal - the forested region of Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Purulia districts which used to be a Maoist hotbed during the erstwhile Left Front regime.

India: What if someone links you to Godhra: Amarinder to Modi

Patiala, May 10 (PTI) Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for targeting the Congress and the Gandhi family over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday said what if someone linked the PM with the 2002 riots in Gujarat's Godhra.

"It is wrong of Modi to connect (former prime minister) Rajiv Gandhi with the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. What if someone starts linking Modi with Godhra," he told reporters here.

Singh said it did not behove the prime minister of the country to "stoop" to such levels for winning elections.
