Delhi: AAP sends notice to BJP, Gambhir demanding apology

New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) The AAP Friday sent a notice to the BJP and its East Delhi Lok Sabha seat candidate Gautam Gambhir demanding an apology for the derogatory pamphlet allegedly circulated against Atishi Marlena, failing which "appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated".

Filed by advocate Mohammad Irsad, from the legal cell of the AAP, the notice termed the pamphlets "offending publication" and alleged that those were published by Gambhir and the BJP.

Indian Polls: Cash seized from BJP candidate's car: Police

Ghatal, May 10 : With two days left for Ghatal constituency to go to polls, the police has seized Rs 1.13 lakh cash from the vehicle of BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh late Thursday night, a senior police officer said Friday. The car in which the former IPS officer was travelling was intercepted at Mangal Bar in Pingla area in West Midnapore district at around 11 PM on Thursday, he said.

Indian Polls: EC prepares for bigger VVPAT count on May 23

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) As it prepares for the mammoth exercise of counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission has stated that in case of a mismatch between EVM and VVPAT machine counts, the latter will be held valid.

Though the exercise of matching EVM results with paper trail machine (VVPAT) slips was being held in various assembly elections, this is the first time it will be undertaken in Lok Sabha polls.

India: Omar seeks action in journalists bribery case

Srinagar, May 8 (PTI) National Conference leader Omar Abdullah Wednesday said action must be taken in the alleged bribery of journalists by BJP leaders in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.

"In light of the CCTV footage purported to show BJP leaders attempting to bribe journalists in Leh, I'm retweeting my original tweet with the letter of complaint by the Press Club Leh. Action must follow," Abdullah said in a tweet.

India: Will bring petrol and diesel within ambit of GST: Rahul

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday promised that if his party is voted to power it will bring petrol and diesel within the ambit of the GST and will try and reduce rising prices.

He said the Congress believes that rising prices have put a heavy burden on the life of the common man.

"To reduce this burden, the Congress party will bring petrol and diesel within the ambit of the GST and will try and reduce the increasing prices," Gandhi said in a Facebook post.

Indian Polls: EC orders repolling in 13 polling stations in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, May 8 (PTI) The Election Commission of India Wednesday announced conducting repolling in 13 polling stations in Tamil Nadu, where the Lok Sabha elections were held on April 18.

The repolling in Dharmapuri, Tiruvallur, Theni and Erode will be held on May 19, state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Satyabrata Sahoo told reporters.

"ECI has informed about repoll in 13 polling stations in Tamil Nadu. It will be conducted on May 19," he said.

Indian Polls: VVPAT EVMs slips: SC dismisses plea of 21 Opposition leaders

New Delhi, May 7 : The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed the plea filed by 21 Opposition leaders seeking a review of its April 8 order directing the Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment.

"We are not inclined to modify our order," a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.

The plea was filed by opposition leaders led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Indian Polls: SC asks EC to look into grievances of Tej Bahadur Yadav

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Election Commission to examine grievances raised by sacked BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav, whose nomination against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varansai, was cancelled.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the counsel for EC to seek instructions and apprise it by tomorrow.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for Yadav, referred to an earlier verdict to the court and said election petitions can be filed during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.

Indian Polls: Caste equations, unauthorised colonies key in North East Delhi seat

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) Caste equations and unauthorised colonies are in focus in the North-East Delhi parliamentary constituency from where political heavyweights - three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit, BJP's Manoj Tiwari and AAP's Dilip Pandey -will try their luck in the May 12 polls.

The constituency has the highest concentration of Poorvanchalis, Muslims and migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who play a decisive role during elections.
