India: Protests against CAA, NRC in Lucknow; police use tear-gas shells

Lucknow, Dec 19 (PTI) Violent protests broke out in Lucknow against the new citizenship law on Thursday afternoon when a mob pelted stones and torched vehicles parked outside a police post.

DGP O.P Singh said police had to fire tear-gas shells to control the situation in Madeyganj area.

About 20 people have been taken into custody, he added.

India: Anti-CAA stir continues in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 19 (PTI) Hundreds of activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India took out a protest march to Raj Bhavan here, the official residence of the Governor on Thursday, after senior Left leaders were detained during an anti-Citizenship Act protest in Delhi.

Raising slogans against the Centre, some of the protesters tried to jump the barricade, placed in front of the Raj Bhavan, and entered the high security area.

India: Centre should repeal controversial CAA: Ashok Gehlot

Jaipur, Dec 19 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said here on Thursday that the central government should repeal the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as it has "shaken the entire country".

"I believe that no one should be proud and the government should decide to repeal it. CAA has shaken the entire country. Students in various colleges and universities have come in protest, people are taking to the streets," he told reporters here.

India: British Council to remain shut on Thursday due to CAA protest

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) The British Council, UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, said it will remain closed on Thursday due to protests against the new citizenship law in parts of Delhi.

The closure has resulted in the cancelling of the book launch of "Forgotten Master: Indian Painting For the East Indian Company", edited by celebrated author-historian William Dalrymple. The event was to be held at 6:30 pm at the council's premises on KG Marg, near Connaught Place.

India: Gauhati HC directs Assam govt to restore mobile internet

Guwahati, Dec 19 (PTI) The Gauhati High Court directed the Assam government to restore mobile internet services at 5 pm on Thursday.

A division bench of Justices Manojit Bhuyan and Saumitra Saikia gave the direction after hearing four PILs filed by journalist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, and advocates Bonoshri Gogoi, Randeep Sharma and Debakanta Doley.

India: Delhi Police use drone to keep track of protesters

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) The Delhi police used a drone to keep a watch on protesters as they gathered to march against the amended citizenship law, from Red Fort in Old Delhi to Shaheed Park near ITO, on Thursday.

The police had denied permission to the left-backed AISA and the Swaraj Abhiyan to hold a march against the Citizenship Amendment Act from Red Fort, citing law and order issues.

India: Police lathicharge on CAA, NRC protesters

Mangaluru, Dec 19 (PTI) Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens turned violent here on Thursday with demonstrators hurling stones at police personnel leading to lathicharge, police said.

Protesters hit the streets, defying prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC that bans assembly of more than four people.

Some of the protesters were holding placards which read 'withdraw CAA and NRC' and 'CAA is against constitution'.

Flights Delayed As Dense Fog Engulfs Delhi

NEW DELHI, Dec 19 (NNN-PTI) — Dense fog engulfed the Indian capital and its surrounding areas on Thursday morning (this morning), as departures and arrivals of many flights and trains were delayed, due to poor visibility.

Regular commuters faced difficulty driving on major highways, since visibility was less than 50 metres at many places.

Indian police ban growing protests of citizenship law

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police banned protests in New Delhi and several state capitals Thursday in an effort to contain growing dissatisfaction over a new citizenship law that opponents say threatens the secular nature of Indian democracy.

Protesters said they will go ahead with a demonstration at New Delhi’s iconic Red Fort and surrounding historic district.

Dozens of demonstrations were planned around country as opposition to a new law that provides a path to citizenship for non-Muslim migrants grows across India.

Bengluru; 19 December 2019 (UMM):  B.S.Yediyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka has imposition Section 144 in Bengaluru and other parts of the state to stop further protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Move came after protests engulfed North Eastern states, Delhi and other parts of India.
