India: Students' body condemns FIR against three Jamia students

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) The Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA) on Tuesday condemned the Delhi Police's action of filing an FIR against three Jamia Millia Islamia students in connection with Sunday's violence in the area around the varsity.

The FIR has been filed against seven persons, including former Congress MLA Asif Khan.

India: BJP legislators visit memorial of RSS founder in Nagpur

Nagpur, Dec 18 (PTI) Maharashtra BJP legislators, including former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, visited the Dr Hedgewar Smruti Mandir in Reshimbaug area of Nagpur on Wednesday morning.

The lawmakers, who are currently in Nagpur to attend the ongoing winter session of the state legislature, paid tributes at the memorial of RSS founder K B Hedgewar, a Sangh functionary to PTI.

They were welcomed at a programme held in the premises and later shown a short film on the memorial.

India: Urdu writer Mujtaba Hussain decides to return Padma Shri

Hyderabad, Dec 18 (PTI) Amid nationwide protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act, city-based Urdu writer Mujtaba Hussain has decided to return his Padma Shri award, saying he was not happy with the current situation in the country.

He alleged criminal activities were increasing day by day and democracy has come under threat in the country.

India: Jamia Teachers Association take out peace march

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) Members of the Jamia Teachers' Association on Wednesday took out a peace march to thank all universities which have supported JMI students in their protest against the amended Citizenship Act and the National Register of Citizens.

Around 200 teachers carried placards reading "I stand with Jamia", "I am against CAA" and messages expressing gratitude to all supporting universities.

The marchers also carried a large map of India showing sites of campus protests across the country.

India: SC dismisses convict's review plea in Nirbhaya rape/murder case

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the plea filed by one of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, seeking review of its 2017 judgement upholding his death penalty.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice R Banumathi said there are no ground to review the 2017 verdict and the contentions raised by convict Akshay Kumar Singh were already considered by the top court in the main judgement.

India’s Supreme Court delays hearing citizenship law pleas

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday postponed hearing pleas challenging the constitutionality of a new citizenship law that has sparked opposition and massive protests across the country. The court said it would consider the pleas on Jan. 22.

Protests and widespread condemnation have been growing against the Citizenship Amendment Act, with demonstrations erupting in India over the last week.

The Central government had been providing a fund to maintain as many as 11 ghats in the city. As regards the Atal Ghat project it was built under the Namami Gangey programme by the Engineers India Limited.

India: WB CM writes to Gov Dhankhaar, asks him to cooperate to maintain peace in the state

Kolkata, Dec 16 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening wrote to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar saying it is the governor's obligation to support the state government to maintain peace and not aggravate the situation through his provocations.

Banerjee expressed her sadness over his taking to the Twitter frequently to criticise her government and urged the governor to cooperate with it to maintain peace in the state.
