India: Man arrested for attempting to rape 9-year-old

Ambikapur, Dec 18 (PTI) A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his son's nine-year-old classmate in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, police said on Wednesday.

Mohan Lakra was arrested on Tuesday evening based on a complaint filed by the victim's parents at Gandhinagar police station in Ambikapur town, a senior police official said.

India: Mamata hits streets for third day against amended citizenship law

Kolkata, Dec 18 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit the streets for the third consecutive day against the amended citizenship law and NRC.

TMC supremo Banerjee, along with her party colleagues, began a protest march from Howrah Maidan which will culminate at Dorina Crossing at Esplanade in the heart of Kolkata.

India: 'Over 10,000 cases of rape in MP in almost two years'

Bhopal, Dec 17 (PTI) More than 10,000 cases of rape have been reported in Madhya Pradesh between January 1, 2018 and November 20, 2019, the Legislative Assembly was told on Tuesday.

In a written reply, Home Minister Bala Bachchan stated that the total 10,279 cases of rape have been reported (to the police) in Madhya Pradesh between January 1, 2018 and November 20, 2019.

India: Cong holds protest against CAA in Haridwar

Haridwar, Dec 17 (PTI) Congress workers in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district on Tuesday staged a protest against the amended Citizenship Act and police action on students of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Led by Jwalapur councilor Suhail Akhtar Qureshi and Congress city chief Sanjay Agarwal, the protesters raised slogans against the Centre.

The two leaders claimed that the BJP is trying to polarise the country under the guise of the amended citizenship law.

India: DU students hold anti-CAA protest

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) A section of Delhi University (DU) students on Tuesday protested against the amended citizenship law and condemned the police crackdown on Jamia Millia Islamia students.

The protest was organised by the Left-backed All India Students' Association and women's collective Pinjra Tod, who claimed that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists targeted "women wearing hijab", a charge denied by the RSS-affiliate.

India: 2 Naxal terrorists arrested in Chattisgarh's Dantewada

Dantewada, Dec 17 (PTI) Two Naxals, carrying rewards of Rs 1 lakh each against their names, were arrested from Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said on Tuesday.

Sukhram Podiyam (24) and Suklu Podiyam (35) were apprehended on Monday evening from the forest near Marjum Junglepara village when a team of District Reserve Guard and local police was on a search operation in Katekalyan police station area, an official said.

India: Accused in Gulberg Society riot case acquitted in Guj

Ahmedabad, Dec 17 (PTI) An accused in the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case has been acquitted by a special court here for lack of evidence.

Ashish Pandey, the accused, was arrested on January 10, 2018, after being on the run for almost 16 years.

The case pertained to a mob attack on Gulberg Society here on February 28, 2002, in which 69 persons including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri were killed.

India: Fresh anti-CAA protests in Delhi's Seelampur area

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) Fresh protests broke out against the amended citizenship law in Seelampur's Brijpuri area on Tuesday night with people pelting stones on police personnel, officials said.

The incident took place at around 8:30 pm, but was brought under control, they said.

Police personnel have been deployed in the area to control any kind of violence, a senior police officer said.

India: Teacher, 2 others held for raping Thane teen

Thane, Dec 17 (PTI) A school teacher and two others were arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Tuesday.

A Hill Line police station official identified the arrested persons as Ulhasnagar residents Akshay Jadhav (19), Chandrakant Bhoir (33), and Ajit Sargar (19) from Solapur.

India: Cops enter Madras varsity as students continue protest against Citizenship Act

Chennai, Dec 17 (PTI) A section of the students of the Madras University continued their protest for the second day on Tuesday against the amendment to the Citizenship Act, as police entered the campus.

Defiant students said they will continue their agitation "through the night."

While police personnel who entered the campus said they were for the "safety of the students," the protesters alleged two of the students were picked up by police.
