Russia says United States is behind Europe's gas supply crisis

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Russia's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the United States had fomented Europe's gas supply crisis by pushing European leaders towards the "suicidal" step of cutting economic and energy cooperation with Moscow.

Europe is facing its worst gas supply crisis ever, with energy prices soaring and German importers even discussing possible rationing in the European Union's biggest economy after Russia reduced gas flows westwards.

Russia records 41,690 daily COVID-19 cases, 76 deaths — crisis center

MOSCOW, September 5. /TASS/: Russia’s COVID-19 case tally rose by 41,690 over the past day to 19,771,113, the anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Monday.

A day earlier, 48,042 daily cases were recorded.

As many as 1,830 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Russia over the past day, down 18.3% from a day earlier. The number of hospitalized patients decreased in 45 regions, while in 32 regions the figure increased. The situation remained unchanged in eight regions. A day earlier, 2,239 people were rushed to hospitals.

Russia's duty is to help Donbass, says Putin

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, September 5. /TASS/: Russia's duty is to help people living in Donbass, all attempts to peacefully resolve the situation ended in failure due to Kiev's position, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday at a meeting with participants of an environmental forum taking place in Kamchatka.

"It is our duty to help these people (those living in Donbass - TASS), and this is exactly what Russia is doing. All our attempts to resolve this problem peacefully have failed because of the Kiev regime’s position," he said.

Russian ex-journalist Safronov gets 22 years in prison for treason

Sept 5 (Reuters) - A Russian court on Monday sentenced a former journalist to 22 years in prison for treason after prosecutors said he disclosed state secrets, a ruling his supporters said was a harsh punishment that showed the absence of media freedom in Russia.

Ivan Safronov, a former defence reporter for the Kommersant and Vedomosti newspapers turned adviser to the head of Russia's space agency, was arrested in 2020 and accused of disclosing classified information.

US not ready for dialogue on strategic stability — Russian diplomat

MOSCOW, September 4. /TASS/: Russia and the United State bear special responsibility for maintain strategic stability by the United States is not ready for such a dialogue, Alexey Drobinin, director of the Russian foreign ministry’s foreign policy planning department, said in an interview with the International Affairs magazine.

"Russia, along with the United States, is one of the two biggest nuclear powers. And we believe that together with the United States we have special responsibility for maintaining strategic stability and international security," he said.
