Somali Canadian peace activist was killed by stray bullet

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Preliminary investigations show a young Somali Canadian peace activist was killed by a stray bullet earlier this week in Mogadishu, the peacekeeping mission in Somalia said Friday, while her family prepared her memorial.

The statement by the African Union mission said Almaas Elman was hit while traveling in a car Wednesday inside a heavily defended base near the international airport where many diplomats and aid workers have offices.

Climate impacts 'to cost world $7.9 trillion' by 2050

20 November 2019; AFP: Climate change could directly cost the world economy $7.9 trillion by mid-century as increased drought, flooding and crop failures hamper growth and threaten infrastructure, new analysis showed Wednesday.

The Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Climate Change Resilience Index measured the preparedness of the world's 82 largest economies and found that based on current trends the fallout of warming temperatures would shave off three percent of global GDP by 2050.

Calls emerge for privatizing South African national carrier amid intensified strike

CAPE TOWN, Nov 19 (NNN-Xinhua) — Calls emerged for privatizing debt-ridden South African Airways (SAA), the national flag carrier being hard hit by a strike.

The airline must be placed under business rescue in order to mitigate any further loss of revenue and to ensure that the entity is a going concern, the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) said.

Without business rescue, the only viable option would be to partially or fully privatize the national carrier, the party said.

ArcelorMittal to shut Saldanha plant in S Africa, 1000 workers affected

PetroSA is under pressure to boost dwindling domestic resources that have imperiled its flagship Mossel Bay gas-to-liquid refinery, which is operating well below capacity.

CAPE TOWN, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- South Africa has deported thousands of illegal immigrants in recent months following a new spate of xenophobic attacks, the country's parliament said Tuesday.

The parliament revealed the information after a meeting was convened by the Portfolio Committees on Home Affairs and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to look at solutions to challenges around immigration in the country, particularly in the northeastern province of Gauteng.

11 October 2019; AFP: South Africa's scandal-plagued former president Jacob Zuma will face a corruption trial, a court ruled Friday, in one of multiple alleged graft cases over his long political career.

The country's High Court unanimously dismissed Zuma's bid for a permanent stay of prosecution over 16 counts of fraud, racketeering and money laundering relating to a multi-billion-dollar arms deal dating back to before he took office in 2009.
