Risk of Ebola’s spread from Congo now ‘very high,’ WHO says

JOHANNESBURG; 29 Sep 2018; (AP) — The World Health Organization says the risk of the deadly Ebola virus spreading from Congo is now “very high” after two confirmed cases were discovered near the Uganda border.

The outbreak in northeastern Congo is larger than the previous one in the northwest and more complicated for health officials. Some of their work was briefly suspended in the past week following a deadly attack in Beni by one of several rebel groups active in the region.

‘Disappointed’ South Africa summons US envoy for Trump tweet

JOHANNESBURG; 24 Aug 2018; (AP) — South Africa’s government said Friday it had summoned the top U.S. diplomat in the country to “convey the unhappiness of the people” over President Donald Trump’s tweet about alleged white-owned farm seizures and the “large scale killing of farmers.”

In a statement, South Africa said it told U.S. Charge d’Affaires Jessye Lapenn it was “disappointed” over the failure to use available diplomatic channels.

Russia not renouncing dollar as universal reserve currency, Putin says

JOHANNESBURG, July 27. /TASS/. President Vladimir Putin said that Russia does not renounce the US dollar as a universal reserve currency.

"Russia does not renounce the dollar as a universal reserve currency," the Russian leader said at a press conference following the results of the BRICS summit.

"We are not going to make any drastic moves, we are not going to renounce the dollar, we are using it and will use it as far as the financial authorities of the United States do not hamper the use of the dollar in settlements," Putin said.

Xi calls for expanding "BRICS Plus" cooperation to address common challenges

JOHANNESBURG, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called on emerging market economies and developing countries to enhance cooperation in addressing common challenges.

Xi made the remarks in a speech to an outreach dialogue grouping leaders from the BRICS, the "BRICS Plus" and African countries at the 10th BRICS summit here.

Chinese president arrives in South Africa for state visit

PRETORIA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday as he started his third state visit to the "rainbow nation" with the aim of boosting bilateral friendly relations and cooperation.

Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were greeted by high-ranking South African government officials at the airport.

This state visit is the first of its kind South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has hosted since he took office in February this year.

BRICS think tanks hold seminar on global governance in interests of people
